A Typical Day In My Life

I recently did a survey asking my readers to provide feedback on what they’d like to see more of on my blog. One of the suggestions made by my readers was to talk about a normal day in my life. I loved this idea so here’s the post!

The first thing to realize here is that I have a full-time job which means I don’t have time during the day to work on my business. That being said, I do now have a team of 14 people and I can tell you that they are busy working every single day. This is the key to balancing my business with my day job. My day job is not my primary income source, as of 2010 I make more money with Linton Investments than with my day job. This begs the question, “Then why not quit your day job?”

The answer to that is easy, I love what I do. I only think you should quit a job if you hate it and waking up in the morning you dread going to work, or if you find something you love more. I happen to work for one of the coolest companies on the planet with some of the most inspiring people in the world. As my own business grew I realized I wouldn’t have the time to support the growth, and this meant bringing on more people and turning it into a real business. If you love what you do there’s really no reason to quit your day job, but the moment you stop loving it, quit.

Okay, so now let’s take a look at my typical day.

I’m not much of a morning person so I tend to get up around 8:00AM. Then Daina and I usually go for a jog or to the gym and then will either sit the hot tub or head back home. We then have breakfast and spend the morning together. At around 9:30AM I dive-into my day job and work until about 6:00PM just about every day.

That’s what I’m doing during the day, but here is what my company is doing. I have a team of people that are constantly working on our sites, so during the day they are making SEO tweaks, working with content writers, doing backlink building, etc. I also have writers that are constantly adding new content and engaging with other publications online.

On the domain sales side I have one person fielding my inbound inquiries on domains another person just focused on acquiring domains. I have great people that know the kinds of names that I look for and spend time scouring the net looking for potential investments. I have two social media managers who manage our Twitter and Facebook accounts and keep these rocking every day.

So while I’m at home working, the business is running full speed ahead. At about 6:00PM Daina and I might go to the beach, go out to dinner, or meet with someone who is in town. We have a lot of business contacts that we work with and people are constantly coming-into LA so we do quite a bit of entertaining and networking.

Typically at 8:00PM or 9:00PM I sit down and write a blog post (writing this one at 8:15PM on Monday night) and then review with my project manager what the team has done for the day. I’d say I spend about 2-3 hours a night on the business with most of the time going-into team management and making sure that we are tracking towards our goals. Daina and I also spend about an hour each night working on Appraiso or one of the other software companies we are building. Daina has a brand-new company she started a couple of weeks ago so we’re both wearing CEO hats and bouncing ideas off each other.

At around 10:00PM or 11:00PM Daina and I will usually watch one of our favorite shows like Star Trek or Seinfeld and then head off to bed. Of course I do travel quite a bit so this only covers my typical day at home. When I’m off globe-trotting every day is different but they all usually involve a few meetings and plenty of dinners and nightlife to follow.

Two weekends out of every month we skip town and either go wine tasting, or just find a great B&B and relax. The other two weekends we typically work on one of our software companies, focusing on strategic planning. For us, we are all about building businesses, not creating another job for ourselves. We have no dreams of being self-employed, for us it’s all about finding and building repeatable models for making money.

I used to stay up late looking at drop lists or evaluating potential purchases, maybe send a few sales emails. Now I have great people who do this, and love doing it. This means that I have very little day-to-day involvement outside of this blog which has become my only real daily commitment, but I absolutely love it, and as I’ve said before, my plan is to blog into my 100’s.

So there you have it, a typical day in my life! I’ve had a lot of people ask me how I juggle everything and I hope this gives you a window into my life and the way in which we run our businesses. When you’re just starting out in the Domaining space and only making a few thousand dollars a month this might not be possible. However, once your making a solid $20k-$30k or more per month, take a chunk of that money and find great people to run the business so that you can stay focused on working on the business, rather than in it.

As always I’d love to hear from you, comment and let your voice be heard!
