We recently updated an existing site and disabled Akismet for three days. I think this does a good job illustrating why Akismet is probably the most important WordPress plugin you can have, albeit one that is often under-appreciated since it is so diligently running behind the scenes. (If you can’t read the number that’s 143 spam comments, almost 50 a day!)

I used to have the IntenseDebate commenting system installed on my blog without Akismet. Undoubtly, it can become really hard at times to have a blog run comments without Akismet.
