Definitely spot on! I run into it everyday.

Can't tell you how many times I have contacted an author or company that has an article about their new product or service, that I have the exact match keyword domain for. Obviously the domain name is generic and non-trademarked.

But I get classified as a "cybersquatter" because I had the foresight to predict what technology or product would become mainstyle. So instead of recognizing the marketing opportunity people are being offered, the prospective buyer turns resentful and most of the time "turned off".

I don't have the complete answer but after the "single wide" mobile trailer was renamed as an efficient "modular home", they became more acceptable. Perception is everything. From now on I'm offering
brand reinforcement, collateral advertising and supportive marketing.

Best,
Dale Buckey

Great post. I forget how uninformed the general public are about domains. They use them everyday to navigate the internet, but never stop to think about what the domain name is accomplishing for them.

Cybersquatters set the industry back 5-10 years, and hurt many good people and companies.

great post. I have a feeling that we will see a grassroots effort start to occur with something bigger coming from it as far as an industry organization existing that reaches out to the mass market.

after my post about the lack of industry leaders pushin the industry forward I have been contacted several times about what type of organization I thinking of.

Aron meystedt has done some good posts on this recently as well and Adam strong and I are to sit down soon as well to talk.

this is the only industry I know of that the leaders do not have an industry promotion group. we just keep promoting to ourselves to tell ourselves how great our products are. that has to be fixed or we will also be considered an amateur industry z

"Is it just me or is it absolutely frustrating that tech-savvy people, who read blogs, understand the Internet, even design websites themselves have NO IDEA WHAT WE DO!"

Yes!! I appreciate the spirit behind this post. I believe the problem is there are really no "industry spokespeople".
