Startup Name Change – From YouSendIt.com to Hightail.com

I’ve been using YouSendIt.com for quite a while now, if you don’t know what it is, You Send It is a service for sending large files. If you’ve ever had to send really big files over email you know it doesn’t work too well. YouSendIt.com stores the file on their servers and make it easy to send that file as a link.

Recently the company announced that they were changing their name, after much debate and many different names considered they decided to go with Hightail and of course the corresponding Hightail.com.

Hightail.com Main Site

So why the name change? They want to do a lot more than sending files, and the name YouSendIt was holding them back. After considering many different options they decided Hightail fit them best.

The team at Hightail did a great video about why they decided to change their name and what drew them to hightail. It’s definitely worth watching and I think this is a great move by YouSendIt to break out of their shell and take their business to the next level. For any startups considering a name change, this video is a must-watch:

What do you think? Good move or was there a better name out there that you think would have been a better fit? Comment and let your voice be heard!

I’m a paying “you send it” customer and have used the service for many years, and have recommended it to many other professionals. I’m VERY disappointed in the name change. The new name feels unprofessional and not that relevant compared to yousendit.

You send it so much more relevant, it describes the service very well, much better than hightail. I’m not comfortable recommending “hightail” to anyone.

I loved the original name, years ago when I was picking a website to send large files, I felt that ‘you send it” had the best professional name so I stuck with it. Just my opinion… hope they change it back to the original name. I might just stop paying and use drop box now, drop box sounds so much more professional.

The video is very funny, seems like marketing 101 is being violated here. When I want to send a file all I want to do is send a file. What in the world is a “impact player in a broader opportunity mean” they got 40 million people using yousendit thats major impact and brand dominance! So they are going to be more than file sending now? Why and who really cares.

If I’m sharing my work for creative reasons then I’m going to post it to youtube, facebook or some other community, if I’m going to send my work I’ll send it with yousendit . I view you send it as a tool to send files in a professional manner.

I was surprised that people I knew who use yousendit also had the same concerns.
