What domain marketplace is the most startup friendly?

startups

This weekend I was hanging out with another founder here in Austin who is looking at re-branding. As usual, one of the first questions that comes to mind (often with terror) is getting the domain name without paying a small fortune. In the case of my friend, he didn’t already have a name in mind so he wanted to visit a marketplace to get inspiration and to get a realistic price expectation in mind. His thought was, why waste time coming up with names that end up being way out of our budget when we can look at a domain and the price side-by-side.

He has a point. Which led me to start sharing some of the marketplaces I’ve turned to over the years like Buy Domains, Uniregistry, Sedo, Afternic, Park.io, I kinda kept going since my head apparently is a virtual (err, non-virtual) database of places to buy domain names. To which my friend said, uh, can you just pick one, there’s no way I’m going to try a million different places.

Of course I thought this was a good question for you, my reader. I know that many of my readers are startup founders themselves, and I also have a fair amount of domain name investors as well. So I’d be interested in knowing what you think. What is the most “startup friendly” domain marketplace?
