3 Things I Learned About Domain Investing In Junior High

School Bus

No I did not invest in domain names when I was in Junior High. In 7th and 8th grade I was just starting to get inspired by computers and all the different Bulletin Board systems I could connect to with the latest-and-greatest modem I had bought which at that time I think was a 14.4 baud modem. You remember the sound it used to make right? If you can you’re old like me.

Back to Junior High. There are some life lessons you carry with you that seem to still apply later in life. Looking back on Junior High there are three life lessons that still stand firm in my mind and apply directly to Domain Investing and business in general.

If I plan to learn I must learn to plan – this is the quote that was written on the back of my 7th grade school planner. The saying has stuck with me ever since and it has never been more true than now. Show up disorganized, expect chaos. Plan ahead and you get things done. That planner was worth every penny of the $5 the school charged for it.
  1. There will always be bullies, it’s how you deal with them that matters – the bullies don’t go away after Junior High, and the Domain Industry just like any other industry has its share of bullies. Luckily, just like in Junior High, most people aren’t bullies and that’s who you should stick with. If the people you are hanging out with are constantly saying bad things about other people and trying to disrupt other people’s business, they are the bullies…and if you’re hanging out with bullies you’re probably a bully too. All the bullies I know from Junior High are now proud janitors or fast food employees in my hometown and the bullies in the domain space are making just about as much with domains. Never let the bullies get you down, they represent the bottom 5%, you want to stick with the top 5%.
  2. Experiment, you always learn something new – in Junior High you start experimenting a bit, maybe try your first sip of beer, date a girl or two, sneak out once or twice. Now I’m not promoting underage drinking or attempting to inspire the younger generation to leave their homes without their parents knowing. What I am saying is that in Junior High I experimented, and learned from that what worked and what didn’t, what was right, and what just felt wrong. The same is true in Domain Investing, experiment and don’t be afraid to be wrong or take a risk, just feel it out and what doesn’t feel right probably isn’t.

I had a blast in Junior High, I also thought I knew everything, heck I was 13, what more was there to learn? Luckily I learned later on that I actually knew nothing then. The same is true now, the moment you think you know it all is the moment you stop learning. Keep your mind open, unless you feel like you’ve already hit all your life goals then you still have a lot to learn, I know I do.
