3 Ways To Get More Traffic To Your Blog (Updated for 2014)

Keep Calm and Carry On Blogging

I started this blog back in 2007 at the time more as a journal for myself than anything else. Fast forward to 2014 and it has become a part of my daily life and a true passion of mine. At the end of the day I get the most joy from interacting with my readers, sharing ideas, and sometimes even battling over a hot topic. In most cases when you first start blogging nobody is going to be reading or commenting. It can be discouraging but when you’re just getting started, expect to write to yourself for the first little bit.

If you can live with this reality then you can get over the hump you’ll need to get over. Just keep writing, but know that just writing itself isn’t going to be enough, once you have a good base of posts you’ll need to make some moves to generate more traffic and awareness. The three techniques I discuss below can apply to both new bloggers and those of you who have been blogging for years. Sometimes it just takes applying one new technique to bring in a new stream of traffic.

  1. Get your blog on a blog aggregator in your niche – this is #1 for a reason. In my opinion the best way to instantly increase traffic and exposure to your blog is by joining a blog aggregator. In the Domain Name community we are very fortunate to have Domaining.com but just about every online community has a blog aggregator and it’s worth every penny to be a part of these.
  2. Share your posts on Reddit and Digg – let me guess, you don’t use Digg or Reddit? Here’s the problem, you don’t just want your blog to reach people that are just like you and Reddit alone has 112 million monthly users. You can share your posts on Digg and Reddit for free. There are lots of great tutorials online if you’d like to go deeper and learn how to generate even more traffic from these two networks.
  3. Use Buffer to automatically share previous posts on Social Media – haven’t heard of Buffer? Then this might be the tip that really makes a different for you this year. Buffer makes a very cool app (and can also be used on the web) that allows you to schedule tweets, Facebook posts and more. One of the best ways to grow your readership is to schedule these to post articles you’ve written in the past, you can set this up once and then let it run.

Even if you’re already doing two out of the three things above layering in just one of these techniques can make a big difference over time. As always feel free to share your own tips below or comment on any of mine. Happy Blogging!
