A Very Special Flippa Friday

TGIF everyone and welcome to a very special Flippa Friday! I am very excited to announce that Flippa is now a proud sponsor of MorganLinton.com. As you all know I’ve been a big fan of Flippa for some time now and if you look to the right you’ll see a banner that should get your attention – websites make more money than domains.

The message here is a strong one and definitely something that Domainers have been focusing on more and more – development. Here’s the example, suppose you have a great domain name, it’s making $200/month parked which means you’re probably getting a nice level of traffic but making only a few cents for each click. Also with a parked page you won’t create any long-term customers, let’s face it, nobody is going to bookmark your parked page and visit it every day.

Now let’s take a look at what you could do if you put a website on your domain. Now you take that traffic and rather than selling it for pennies on the dollar you convert it to $1,000/month and start to get repeat customers and some nice referral business. That’s the idea, websites make more money than parked domains.

Here’s the really important piece to understand – this does not mean that domains aren’t as good as websites, it’s just that a great domain can become a great brand when you couple it with an excellent website. When it comes to turning domains into brands I look up to people like the Castello Brothers who saw the value in strong .COM domains and then took it a step further and turned those domains into real brands. Of course they couldn’t have done this with a parking page – they did this by building a website and creating a real business and brand on their domains.

At the last few Domaining conferences I’ve been to from TRAFFIC, to DOMAINfest, to Domain Roundtable, development has been a major focal point. Domainers are looking for ways to improve their declining parking revenue and I’ve seen and participated in some great panels covering all different aspects of the development process.

The domain name is the starting point, it gives you an edge because a great .COM name is easy to remember, may already have existing type-in traffic, and advantageous search rankings. Coupling a great domain with a great website is what I think will be the key to success in the Domaining industry over the next ten years. It’s been happening slowly over the last few years but the rubber will hit the road sooner than you might think, and when it does, those of us that have turned their domains into living, breathing brands will be in a great position.

Flippa offers a great opportunity for Domainers of all skill levels by providing an incredible inventory of developed domains. As Domainers you can still look for a great domain, but you can go a step further and look for a domain that already has a website, traffic, and revenue. This can save a lot of steps and confusion and allows you to start with a working model rather than having to create that model yourself.

There are absolutely stellar domains and websites selling every single day on Flippa. So if you haven’t had a chance to check-out Flippa, now is the time, there are great deals and just like the Domain gold rush of the 90’s, the website gold rush is on, the question is, are you in?

P.S. This is not a sponsored post and Flippa has no idea I’m writing this. I am writing this post because it is what I believe. I’m very excited to have Flippa as a sponsor but as always I’ll speak my mind and tell you how I feel. This is a company that I not only believe in but know can have a major impact on Domainers in so many ways. So if you’ve been holding off, now is the time to get involved, don’t do it because I told you to, do it because you see where the market is going and without a shadow of a doubt Flippa is the market leader when it comes to buying and selling websites.
