After thirteen years, I’m making the move from Go Daddy to EPIK

Moving from Go Daddy to EPIK

Since I started buying and selling domain names, Go Daddy has been my registrar of choice, and before I go any further, it’s important for me to say this. I have really enjoyed getting to know so many amazing people at Go Daddy, from Paul Nicks to Joe Styler, I can say with confidence that Go Daddy has some truly amazing people in their organization.

That being said, and I’m certainly not the first person to point this out – Go Daddy has a lot of bugs, and over the thirteen years I’ve used them unfortunately I’ve seen things get worse from a software-side, not better. One of the people who has been the most vocal about Go Daddy’s bugs is my buddy Shane, who has lately seen the Go Daddy site default to a different country ever time he visits:

Domain Shane Go Daddy Issues

And this is just the tip of the iceberg. But like I said above, there are so many great people at Go Daddy I want to be 100% clear, I’m not leaving because of the people, but all the bugs did cause me to start exploring other solutions.

So why EPIK?

For years different people in the domain industry have told me why they love EPIK and I’ve heard them, but it was EPIK winning the NamePros registrar contest that made me really give it some serious thought.

EPIK wins best registrar

So I decided it was time to do a deeper dive. Along with talking to some friends who have been long time EPIK customers, I spent some time really reviewing the solution, and I was impressed. From the Dashboard that’s fast, efficient, and seems to be bug free, to the support which so far has lived up to its moniker as “legendary,” EPIK does seem to be the real deal.

As I’ve been moving domain names over to EPIK I’ve been able to get more comfortable with the UX and I have to say, there’s something calming about an experience that isn’t trying to upsell me into a million things and doesn’t have a bunch of bugs and error messages along the way.

Additionally, EPIK’s Escrow service is, well, the bomb. Seriously, I don’t see any reason why I would use again, not only is EPIK Escrow saving me money, it’s also saving a lot of time and adding an additional layer of security that buyers definitely appreciate.

Of course, I’m only a few weeks in so who knows, maybe this is just the honeymoon period, I could end up regretting my decision. But as of today, I’m one happy camper, the experience has been great so far and I’m really impressed by the EPIK team who honestly seems to be available every waking hour, pretty much instantly, which is damn impressive.

Like everything I do on my blog, I’ll continue to report back and keep you in the loop. If I run into pitfalls, I’ll share them. If I find cool features I never knew existed, yup – I’ll share those too. If you’re reading, you’re coming along for the ride, good or bad.

For those of you who use EPIK, it would be great to hear more about features you like and things I might not know about that should. As always, I want to hear from you so comment away and let your voice be heard.

2020 is the year I’m leaving Go Daddy and going to EPIK, this is the first post in my journey, stay-tuned, there’s more to come!

    Good luck Morgan!
    You are making a mistake!

a Happy & thankful Epik Customer

Wow. That is quite an endorsement.

As for big money contests, we have considered the idea of “An Epik Challenge” where we would pre-pay someone’s parking revenue for a portfolio for a certain period of time in return for being able to power their domains with Epik SSL landers.

Not sure what folks think about that idea.

As for David’s guarantee, we’ll try not to disappoint. Related comment:

    Hi Morgan:
This was a surprise to read.
    Why not Name Cheap?
Does EPIK offer free who is privacy?
My domains are split between godaddy and Name Cheap.
I never even thought about EPIK until this post.
Your thoughts on Name Cheap would be appreciated

  • Mike April 23, 2020, 7:52 pm

Scott, epik does offer free privacy as many do thee days.

I think what sets epik from the rest is it’s domain leasing program, which has a lot of options for small business, to accelerated startups, and sales checkout options.

The downside is their 15 day grace period, which they should push to 25-30 days.

Great article and great choice. It’s sad to agree that GD is pretty horrible for domain investors. A shame really. To be an industry leader and have a site like that these days…..well, I’d say other registrars are leaving GD in the dust.

Anyway, I’ve also heard great things about Epik. Always had a solid reputation but from what I hear, the escrow service they provide, the liquidation platform and so on, appear to be great.

You’ve made a sound choice as your next move.

Three years to be with Epik, stop registering domains etc in Uniregistry being Premium has not brought me any economic benefit in sales, three Broker Domain two years for a premium domain, a single word for a single buyer, now premium domain ignored, Answer is that the buyer did not reply to his emails, I asked other buyers were not possible, there was no answer.

Many unfulfilled promises, now with Godaddy it has changed to be Godaddy and Uniregistry is not the same there is only Support for important answers, before having an Account Manager now or that.

I like few promises and more answers in Epik to find them and I am happy, contact with marketing at the moment, simple solutions not complicated.

FINALLY! What took you so long, dude.]? Seamless. Secure. Excellent customer service. Escrow. Name Liquidate. So many reasons to use Epik.

    • Mark Thorpe April 24, 2020, 5:31 am

So many reasons NOT to use Epik.

    Epik lease-to-own allowed me buy DNs never thought i could get. awe; financed a $100 DN paying $20 a month, awesome! Only registrar with lease-to-own; and innovation never stops! Pride themselves in security; my favorite part;
“Epik never lost a DN.” In good hands, Morgan! Never felt more valued as a client, Welcome!

Congrats to Rob and he deserves it.
We might agree or/and disagree with him but that not the point.
The point is he is the face behind his company and he is always contributing to the domain community. We know where he lives, what he eats and what he looks like….so tell me do other CEOs or other owners of the other registrars you know contribute to the domain community?
Rob at Epik is the only one that is here for us…. and he gives excellent customer service!
Just like my buddy DomainShane-he is the face of his business and he is the most hardest working “white” guy working in his field and that why he has the right to brag how much money he makes….and the plants he grows even though I still own the biggest indoor jade plant in the world.
It is more personal and easier when you are dealing with the owner of the business.
Yea, we need more “white” guys working in the fields.

  • Michael April 24, 2020, 12:43 am

I do like most things about Epik, but I wonder what your buddy Shane has to say about your move?

  • RK April 24, 2020, 5:23 am

I am with Epik for about 1.5 years and couldn’t be happier.
About 60% of our domains are at Epik and about 40% at Dynadot.

I am very happy with both, both have excellent support and security. Free privacy, amazing pricing, and good bulk tools.

Rob deserves a lot of credit for Epik’s rise.

Epik has been my favorite for a number of years now after discovering them.

  • Mark Thorpe April 24, 2020, 5:29 am

Doesn’t surprise me that you drank his Kool-Aid.

  • George In Miami April 24, 2020, 8:25 am

Morgan, good for you realizing Epik is excellent registrar.
I’ve been using them during several years.

  • Anon April 24, 2020, 8:34 am

Epik gives me the creeps. No amount of obvious soft promotion in domain forums, blog comments, and NamesCon Q&A sessions is going to change my mind, in fact, it’s what gives me the creeps in the first place. There’s something not quite right with Epik. A bit of “too good to be true”. Feels like a Madoff scandal in the making two years from now.

      • Jay April 24, 2020, 9:04 am

Dude give it a rest. I’ve used nearly every registrar out there and nothing compares to Epik. Maybe if you tried the kool aid you would like it.

        • Anon April 24, 2020, 9:25 am

          No thank you, Mr. Jonestown.

      • David April 26, 2020, 9:16 am

You are absolutely RIGHT, he is creepy
C Committed to his customers & employees
R Responds immediately any question, need by phone or email
        E Empathy
E Empowers others within the Industry in many ways
P Produces products & services to peoples needs.
Y YOU, What do you do for others, what are your contributions, what product or
services you provide, can we read about your happy customers?
Have 0 interest or benefits from Epik other than being a Happy Customer

As Jay said, Try the kool aid comes in different flavors! Our thoughts & words are a reflection of what lives within Us

Thanks for sharing Morgan, good to hear your initial opinion of EPIK, including its escrow service, and I will be following your “EPIK journey” with interest in the coming months. Registrants need registrars who are trustworthy and hold their registrants’ stakeholder interests as a “core value,” especially since ICANN has now abandoned even the pretense of caring about registrants’ stakeholder interests. Hopefully you will find EPIK to be in the same category as Namecheap in this regard. Unfortunately, the domain name industry, generally, is a sleazy business and “the rot starts at the top” at ICANN. More will be revealed.

  • Kassey Lee April 24, 2020, 1:56 pm

Epik is the only registrar where its CEO is accessible and willing to solve problems. They innovate — fast! Epik is my home and I use Godaddy only to pick up expired domains.

  • Tristan April 26, 2020, 6:09 am

Morgan, did you consider Google Domains?

    • John May 2, 2020, 2:40 pm

One of the world’s biggest or possibly the biggest perpetrator of pro-establishment censorship and suppression of free speech including against both the “right” and the real “left”?
