Building A Directory Site Just Got Easier – AppThemes Releases WordPress Vantage Directory Theme

I don’t think that I’ve ever written a post about one specific WordPress theme before, but I think this one really does warrant a post. The theme is called Vantage and it’s from popular WordPress theme developers AppThemes. I have been following this theme for over a year now, ever since they put a preview of it on their site. So what is Vantage and why am I so excited about it?

Vantage is a Directory theme, and in typical AppThemes form it really is more than a theme, it’s a full featured Directory Platform that you can get up and running in minutes using WordPress. I have been using WooThemes Listings in the past but have found some limitations to this and after my previous experiences with AppThemes, I think they probably are the best to deliver the goods in this department.

Here’s a look at what the basic UI of the theme looks like:

As you can see the look-and-feel is top-notch and since AppThemes specializes specifically in themes that are full-featured apps the backend really is as perfect as you could get. I will be using this theme to run Kayaking.org v4 and my developer is going to start porting our directory over this week. I’ll let you all know once it’s up and running so you can take it for a spin, or paddle!

I have been using PHPMyDirectory for years but find that it is incredibly clunky and impossible for me or my users to use efficiently. So goodbye PHPMyDirectory and hello Vantage. I can’t wait to get this up and running!

How are you getting on with Vantage?
I am just looking into using it for a new directory project but wanted to know your thoughts…

    Thanks in advance

    Hi

Any insight on importing PMD db into the vantage theme?

Great question @Jenn and one I would love to know the answer to myself! Unfortunately PMD is still much of a mystery to me. I would do a search for PMD experts on Google and see if any of them can help point you in the right direction.

Well I think I have figured out a way to get to the important “User” data. At least I have been able to get to a readable format I can deal with by doing the following. From here it is just a matter of manipulating the data to match with the vantage scheme.

    1. I started with an exported PHP My Directory DB backup (exported via phpMyAdmin interface from hosting provider).
    2. Installed wamp server on my laptop
    3. Setup WordPress on wamp server.
    4. Installed and activated Vantage Theme
    5. Created a new test DB (named it “sept5”) in the phpMyAdmin interface on my wamp setup
    5. Imported the PHP My Directory SQL file into a new db via the phpMyAdmin interface in wamp
    6. Exported the table “Users” using the custom export method, setting were:
    Dump all rows
    Save output to a file
    csv
Remove carriage return/line feed characters within columns
Put columns names in the first row

    Hi Morgan,

Thanks for the post. I am trying to decide between Vantage, Brilliant Directories and eDirectory. Do you have any experience with Brilliant Directories or eDirectory?

Hi @Phil – I haven’t tried Brilliant Directories or eDirectory but both look like good solutions. I think the question is whether you want to run your directory on top of WP or not. Hope this helps!
