.CC Is In The News, but is it worth investing in?

A long time ago, in a galaxy far far away I bought one .CC domain, Genome.cc. Yes, for some reason this is what came to mind at the time when I bought the domain. Since then I’ve mostly steered clear of the .CC market.

Now, with the uptick in buying activity from China and a verified price drop on .CC domain names, it seems .CC has been cast into the spotlight.

I’ve heard people say in the past that .CC could easily be used for “Chinese Company” but honestly I’ve never felt that was a compelling enough reason to invest in this TLD. Still it’s short, easy to remember, and it’s been around for a while so there are some nice aged names that would cost six-figures in .COM for a fraction of the price.

The question is, in a world with .CLUB, .NYC, .GURU, .XYZ, .CLICK and many more, does an old TLD like .CC get new life? What do you think? Comment and let your voice be heard!

  .CC is a lucrative ccltd for the Chinese. It is easier to type, repeat C. It has proved its potential in the Chinese market and I don’t think a discussion on that regard is required.

  Few days ago .CC was trending in the Chinese market. As per the chart below the average price has rallied from 555 RMB to 708 RMB. I would assume the price drop was known to some people who did make an advantage of it.

  There are 4 points to make in .CC’s favor:

  (1) .CC began gaining traction in China before the nTLDs did. That probably gives it an edge.
  (2) .CC is shorter than any nTLDs.
  (3) .CC has doubled letters.

  We all know the Chinese preferences for short strings and repeating patterns. On the left of the dot, that has been extensively documented with sales. If those preferences extend to the right of the dot, then .CC is sitting pretty.

  (4) Chinese websites really are built on .CC. ChaoMi.cc is 1 example.

  For these reasons, I think .CC is 1 of the more promising TLDs when it comes to actual usage within China. That said, whether .CC is a good investment or not for domainers is an entirely different question. That depends on whether prices – which are already sitting fairly high – rise or fall. That’s far less sure.

  Note: I own zero .CC domains. And I hesitated to say any of this because I’ve been attacked in the past as a Verisign shill – despite never having taken a penny from Verisign and having written articles criticizing shills! (I suppose that’s because I criticized .XYZ.) But no matter what I say or don’t say, someone will attack me. If I didn’t say .CC has merit, people would say I’m biased against the Chinese market! When I criticize X, Shane Cultra calls me a conspiracy theorist. When I praise X, I’m called a corporate stooge.

  .cc is the easiest extension to type and remember in the World. That alone makes it a great extension. Short is sweet in a mobile World and .cc wins IMO.
  Cutting reg fees to $8 makes it that much sweeter.
  I have lots of them and lately the lll.cc’s have consistently been getting $1k+ offers. I am obviously biased but offers are happening. Any extension that has more than 3 characters is too difficult to type with your thumbs.
  Another use that I have heard is for crypto-currency but I think that just because it’s the easiest one to type makes it a winner.
  Time will tell but so far it has only gone up and the price of entry is peanuts compared to the .com equivalent

  This strategy has already been used for countless other domain segments targeting the Chinese Palate. Yummy!

  Hi Morgan-thank you for this post. It’s actually very timely for me-we were just talking about getting a Spanish speaking broker for a name we’ve had for a while Seguros.cc (“insurance” ) in Spanish. Obviously a great name for the right company looking to break into the Hispanic Insurance market even if it’s not .com but I really have no idea what we’ll get for it but like the idea that .cc seems to be picking up. So time will tell. Thank you.

  Oh, and it’s run by Verisign who runs .com so naturally investors see stability in the extension. Cheers!
