.CO.COM Sets A New Standard In Trademark Protection

As many of you know I can’t stand people who register a bunch of Trademark domain names. They give us all a bad name and in the end cause the Trademark holder to spend their time and money to get a name back. With the sea of new gTLDs that is coming our way there is no doubt that Trademark owners are going to have a big job ahead enforcing their Trademark across some many different TLDs.

Enter .CO.COM, a new TLD started by domain industry veterans Paul Goldstone, Ken Hansen, and Greg McNair. Hansen, the president of .CO.COM gained a lot of experience running TLDs at NeuStar and has clearly taken that experience to give .CO.COM a very nice edge in how they deal with Trademark issues.

First, the registry voluntarily adopted ICANN’s Uniform Dispute Resolution Policy (UDRP) and Uniform Rapid Suspension (URS), to enable trademark holders and registrants to resolve disputes, and for enforcement. Registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, and require the submission of a validation file issued by the ICANN Trademark Clearinghouse.

Sounds pretty robust right? Well they went a step further and added very cool software from a company called Architelos that monitors .CO.COM and allows them to easily identify and deal with any potentially abusive .CO.COM domains.

Hats off to the whole team at .CO.COM for taking Trademarks so seriously, if registries do their part the world can be a lot safer and less frustrating place for Trademark holders. Given the team behind .CO.COM I’m not surprised to see this TLD pushing the limits and innovating in a sea of change, well done!
