Do you cover the webcam on your laptop? The FBI thinks your should…

For years I’ve wondered if I should go through the trouble of covering the webcam on my laptop. Honestly I’ve felt like it’s a bit of an urban legend that hackers could actually access your webcam and watch you without you knowing. Well, now that the FBI director is saying that you should, I think it’s safe to say it’s time to take this more seriously.

The head of the FBI on Wednesday defended putting a piece of tape over his personal laptop’s webcam, claiming the security step was a common sense one that most should take. (Source – TheHill)

So I think it’s time I changed my tune and take the five seconds it takes to cover my webcam with a piece of tape. Still it feels silly doing this but I feel like it’s probably time to take the plunge. Have you already done this or am I just getting more paranoid over the years?

There was a semi large story when Mark Zuckerbergs laptop was shown with tape over it as well.

I think it’s a mute point. Phone security breaches will be worst of all. Your phone never leaves your side. Video + mic. Think on that one next time you’re taking a poop )

Well just to add on to this you should also disable your microphone. nut whoever is watching or listening can just enable your microphone if they really wanted to. Just saying.

I don’t cover it with tape, but I occasionally flip the bird at it in case anyone is watching.

Always. Fold colored 3M Post-it notes and secure with a binder clip. Use several Post-it notes for thickness so the clip won’t scratch your laptop. Also the Post-it notes will cover the two pinhole sized microphone ports.

Been doing this for many many years.

I started disabling and covering webcams way back when I first got DSL. People don’t often think to also disable the mic in their device manager.

Anyone looking for low profile stickies for your phone or computer, I use and recommend these:

If hackers love my nostril hair that much, they’re welcome to it.

At TechDay LA yesterday they were handing out stickers that you can slide open or shut to hide your camera. Thought they were a cool marketing swag item (super cheap to make & users will see your logo every day) and so grabbed one. Just read this & decided to stick it on. Works great. I feel safer already. But no one steal my idea…we’ll have them at our NamesCon booth, you can hold off with tape until January. 🙂

@Jen – awesome, I’d happily use an Igloo sticker 🙂
