Domaining And The Holidays

The Holidays which really start this week and go until the end of the year creates some unique opportunities for Domainers. I think there are advantages for buyers and monetizers and some disadvantages for those trying to sell or flip their domains. Below is a brief analysis of how I see the holidays impacting each piece of the Domaining space:

Domain Monetization
November and December are undoubtedly the biggest months for my monetization business. Things like Payday loans and instant loans are big and of course there are plenty of specials that you can offer to your clients through affiliate products. This year I’m looking at all the outdoor and kayaking related affiliate deals I can offer my customers this year.

The holidays are a time to focus on product sites and the hotter the product you have the better-off you are. Of course you could also focus on an entire category and benefit from a broad range of deals.

We all know that the Holidays are the one time that people really open up their wallets and spend. Sure the economy has been down but as we saw last year people still spend big during the holidays. If you make money from monetization this is your chance to fight for your fair share of the holiday spending spree!

Buying Domain Names
If you are buying domain names I think that you also have a nice advantage over the holidays – less competition. Many Domainers go on vacation, spend time with family, etc. With less people buying domanis and less eyes on auction sites you have a better chance as a buyer.

Particularly on holidays themselves I think that buyers can have a big edge. I know for a fact that I won’t be monitoring any Snapnames auctions on Thrusday like I usually do and I’m not alone.

Of course this doesn’t mean you should spend your holidays away from family bidding on domains like crazy…but it does mean you should keep your eyes open for good deals.

Selling Domain Names
Unfortunately we aren’t at a point in our society where domains are a great gift idea. Sure I give them as gifts and I’m sure others reading do too, but most people don’t and that’s not changing anytime soon.

During the holidays most people put their money into gifts and travel. This is a time when many people spend beyond their means. Since many domain buyers are not full-time Domainers chances are their holiday funds will be put-into gifts and travel like everybody else.

Don’t get me wrong, huge sales can happen at any time. If you have a great preimum one-word .com you can sell it any day of the year if the price is right. However if you have a portfolio of more speculative names you’ll have to wait until after the holidays are over.

So those are my thoughts about how the Holidays impact Domaining, now I’d like to hear what you think!
