Domaining SEO Sunday: Do You Understand URL Canonicalization?

URL Canonicalization is one of the most misunderstood yet important SEO concepts. The basic idea is that Google (or anyone for that matter) can link to different versions of your site, in most cases www.yoursite.com and yoursite.com. In most cases a 301 redirect is used to make sure everyone ends-up at the same place.

Does this make sense? If it’s your first time learning about canonicalization this brief introduction won’t really cut it. Luckily I was able to find a great post that Matt Cutts (from Google) wrote back in 2006 about canonicalization. Sure I could teach you the details…but wouldn’t you like to hear it from the guy that deals with it at Google?

Hope you’re all having a great weekend! Right now I’m sitting in Palm Springs enjoying a little R&R – thank goodness for scheduled posts…writing this on Saturday morning 🙂
