eCommerce Conversion Rates By Channel

Getting someone to come to your site is one thing, getting them to buy is a whole different process. This is where you move from the world of development to the world of optimization. Probably the best person in the planet at doing this is my buddy Tim Ash over at SiteTuners. This is what they do all day, night, and weekend, optimize the heck out of sites so that they convert more visitors into paying customers.

However, as many of you probably know by now, optimizing your site is only half of the equation, some channels convert better than others. Facebook for example converts five times better than Twitter and Bing actually converts three times better than Facebook (yes Bing is still alive and kicking butt).

I’m always trying to stay up-to-date on which channels are providing the best conversions and found an excellent chart on SmartInsights that shows some great data I thought you would all enjoy. Make sure to check-out their site, the article this came from has a lot more juicy eComm data for any fellow eCommerce geeks out there.

A few things I found interesting about this data:

  • Bing converts better than Google by almost 2x
  • Facebook converts 5x better than Twitter (although I’m not too surprised since Twitter really is better for conversation than selling)
  • AOL Search has such a strong conversion rate (who the heck is using this?)
  • Don’t waste your time trying to sell things on LinkedIn, nobody’s buying
