Expired domain name Portal.to just broke the $1,000 mark in auction

When it comes to investing in domain names, .COM has always been my focus. At the same time, I’ve never been afraid of experimenting with a few names in other TLDs. So far, the only experiment that has gone well is .IO which I’ve found to be a good investment if you can get good names at a true wholesale price.

One domain extension that has not been on my radar is .TO which technically is the ccTLD for the Island Kingdom of Tonga, you know – this place:

Island Kingdom of Tonga

And no, this isn’t a photograph of the entire island kingdom since it’s actually comprised of 169 islands, 36 of which are inhabited.

But I digress.

The .TO ccTLD seems to be heating up, I’m seeing it more and more now and today when I went to look at auctions on Park.io I saw that the top auction today is Portal.to which as of me writing this post was just over $1,000.

Last year 1.to sold for $20,000 and Music.to sold for $38,887 in 2018 so there are some meaningful five-figure sales out there. The single letter or number .TO domains did well with w.to coming in as the top public .TO sale at $53,000.

Still, all that being said, $1,000 for Portal.to was pretty shocking for me but maybe the .TO market has more potential than I thought. Either way, this caught my eye and I thought it was worth sharing with all of you. No, I’m not going to rush out and register a bunch of .TO domains but I certainly am going to pay a little closer attention because it does seem like there’s something interesting going on here.
