First Southern California Domainer MeetUp – Starting-Off With A Bang!

The first Southern California Domainer MeetUp took-place in Downtown Los Angeles last night and dramatically exceeded our expectations! We had twelve total attendees which means that just about everyone that RSVP’ed actually came to the event!

Domain Sponsor was in attendance and it was great to have their support! The CEO of Freshdrop was also at the meeting and definitely re-affirmed for me what a progressive and forward-thinking company Freshdrop is! Of course there were GREAT domainers at the MeetUp including two people, Ron and Oscar who drove-up from San Diego. For those who don’t know California geography very well – that can be a LONG drive with traffic!

Ron got his start in the Domaining world by selling domains on eBay and built his business up into the six-figure range through selling some excellent names through Snapnames. Oscar, who was his banker during his rise in the industry said, “What the heck are you doing? This looks interesting!” Ron has taken Oscar under his wing and become his mentor in the Domaining world. This is the kind of thing we don’t see often enough and it was great to see an inspired Domainer welcoming other people into the industry!

I gave a 45-minute presentation covering our vision for the group and an introduction to Linton Investments and what I’ve done to build-up my business. One important point I made at the beginning, middle, and end of the meeting is how important it is that we get more people involved in the industry. As I’ve said time and time again this industry can get very insular with a focus only on full-time Domainers. I gave the following example that I think is very important:

If you know a Doctor who is investing in Real Estate and Flipping Houses on the side as investment income would you tell him/her to quit his job as a Surgeon and become a real estate agent?

If you know a successful business executive who heavily invests in the stock market are you going to tell them to quit their job and become a stock broker?

The idea here is simple and the whole group agreed last night – Domain Names are an investment vehicle, just like people invest in Physical Real Estate, they can also invest in Virtual Real Estate. However everyone that makes money investing in real estate shouldn’t have to work in the real estate industry and the same should be true of Domaining!! In future meetings we want everyone to bring someone with them that knows little or nothing about Domains BUT is interested in finding a good place to invest. Bring your friends that are Doctors, Lawyers, Financial Analysis, etc. that have extra income that they would normally put-into real estate or the stock market and let’s show them why the domain world is a great place for them to invest!

I think we could use these investors at our conferences. Think if the attendance at Rick Latona’s auctions doubled and the room was half Domainers and half investors with money to spend that are now inspired by the opportunity our industry can offer! I will be posting a video of my presentation, pictures from the event as well as provide access to my presentation to anyone who wants it so check-back later today and you can re-live the MeetUp!

Thanks again to everyone who made it out to the event – it was a historic night and we completely filled a room we were worried would be empty! We’ll be heavily promoting the next event and seeking a much larger meeting space as it is clear this is going to be BIG!

That’s awesome! It’s too bad the meetup was a little far away, otherwise I would love to attend!

Seems like a great night I think local domainer meetings are great, if only California was a little closer to Florida.
