Foursquare Releases Their New App – Swarm

I’ll start by saying I have been a big fan of Foursquare for some time now. As many of you know I’m a very public person so I have no problem broadcasting where I am and I’ve found it’s a great way to see what your friends are up to. Last year I ended-up meeting with a good friend from college while shopping at Nordstrom, all because he was in the area and saw that I was there on Foursquare.

Foursquare Badges

Initially I was really into the badges. That lasted a few months and then the excitement of getting a new badge wore off. I can still remember seeing people announcing their badges on Facebook every day, I haven’t seen that in a while.

Now I use Foursquare the most to get tips and information about the place that I am currently in. A good example, I went to a very cool somewhat secret bar in SF last year, Foursquare told us about a whole other section we might not have found without it. I couldn’t get the same data from a Google search, maybe Yelp, but I’ll have to wade through all the complaints.

Here’s the problem though, while I’ve been able to find a ton of value in Foursquare, growth has slowed and now the company is looking for a way back up. Swarm is their latest app that was just released today, here’s the email I got this morning:

Swarm App Foursquare

So I’ve already downloaded the app and will be playing around with it for the next week. If I think it’s something special you’ll most-likely see another post about it, if not, then well, maybe not. Either way I think Foursquare is doing the right thing, they know they need to make some changes and over the next few months we’ll see if this is a step in the right direction.

If you’ve been waiting to try the Swarm App you can download it Android Marketplace or iPhone App Store.
