Help Me Make My First Viral Video…Viral

I had a fun idea yesterday that only took a few minutes this morning – create my first viral video. It might sound like a stupid goal, or maybe even an impossible goal…but I’m going to try. My plan right now is to promote the video using Twitter, Facebook, and the Blogosphere. I tried to create something that I thought would catch people’s attention and then provide some humor (hopefully). Remember, a viral video doesn’t get popular because of SEO, it’s all social media baby!

I’ve chiseled-out a small budget for sponsored tweets as well so I can have a few big-name bloggers Tweet this around. Any more ideas are welcomed!

Okay, now here’s where you come in. If you want to help me make this viral (and only do it if you think the video is funny) please send it along to friends, family, anyone else you think would enjoy it. The idea is to trick someone and I’ve already sent this around to a bunch of friends who thought it was hilarious. Also if you could please please please vote for it on Digg I will gladly add a “do follow” link to your site in a future post. I think we all take life too seriously sometimes and if this video makes you smile, laugh, or chuckle it will have achieved its goal.

Okay, so I’m guessing you want to see the video – here it is:

For me making this video and trying this first shot at an 100% social media advertising campaign will be an adventure. Sure, it probably won’t become viral, I’m a realist, but if I never tried how would I fail and learn? Either way this was worth the 3-minutes to make. If you thought the video was funny and really want to help me out please vote for it on Digg. It might not take too many Digg votes to get this one going and in return I’d be happy to add a link to your site in a future post (do follow)!

Thanks in advance and let me know what you think. Feel free to be mean if you don’t like the video, I can take it 🙂

No Morgan. This is stupid. Keep trying and you might get something though.

      @Troy – haha, okay thanks 🙂

Maybe I’ll do a contest to see how can come-up with the best viral video!

I actually feel a little bad saying it was stupid. It would be more correct for me to say that it is not the type of video that I would forward to a friend. Others might be much more prone to however. Don’t take what I think to seriously.

Here’s my recommendation for giving you a much, much better chance of getting a viral video. Have the video star somebody who already has a following in the YouTube community. In other words, get a YouTuber who has at least 25,000 subscribers and who also is active on Twitter and has a big following on Twitter. To get a huge YouTube star would cost you lots of money. But you could get somebody that is big enough to help generate some views, but small enough that they’d earn so little as a YouTube partner that it’s worth their while to do this for you at minimal cost. Have them star in the video and promote it a bit on Twitter, Facebook, BlogTV, etc. Our YouTube channel has featured some of YouTube’s biggest stars (before they became megastars), people like kevjumba, davedays, and sxephil, and that helped get the videos a lot of views.

I guess the question you should ask is if the sender states the contents are confidential and they specifically ask you to not reveal the contents, do you want this to be your first viral video? Just an idea.

“Sure, it probably won’t become viral” …. could it be you might have already set the tone and the pace even before you started.

Just do a paranormal activity movie kind of video. Make the video look like it was shot from a CCTV or security camera.

@Anunt haha – I am a nerd and proud of it! I spend hours everyday writing this blog sharing a lot of the details on how I run my business…shouldn’t I be able to have fun and joke around every once and a while?

Sorry but I’ll have to kick you off my blog, I only allow readers with a sense of humor 🙂

Nice first try on a funny video. The overall idea was really good, so I Digged it just for that reason. However, I think you should have put something else in the box instead of a calculator, such as something that would really suprise the viewer.

Thanks for the comment @Jeff and excellent feedback!

      • Morgan November 17, 2010, 5:14 am

Thanks @Lethal – I was trying to think of what else I could use besides my calculator, was thinking a really old cellphone would have been funny too 🙂

  • Joe November 17, 2010, 12:35 am

ahah Kinda nerdy stuff, but being a Computer Engineering student I can’t disagree with you 🙂

  • Morgan November 17, 2010, 5:15 am

    Right-on @Joe – I agree it’s nerdy…but I’m a nerd, great to hear feedback from a fellow nerd!

Sorry Morgan…i apologize…it’s all good…but you said, “Feel free to be mean if you don’t like the video, I can take it”

Morgan, How/where are you buying sponsored tweets, for how much, and what were the results. I need this tweet re-tweeted:

Morgan, it was well thought out but just delivered wrong in my eyes. Also, I believe the best “Viral Videos” are about 30 to 60 seconds long. The attention span of users online web surfing is very short, so you want to cut your time down to attract and hold the right viewers.

I am also going to start my own “Viral Videos” pretty soon but haven’t thought of a great idea yet. You are on the right track though when it comes to marketing. You have to make sure you spread the link around through video sharing sites, forums/blogs, social networks, along with friends and family via email.

    Good Luck Morgan!
