How Search Will Change in the Next Five Years

Search Engine Land did a great article on Friday about how search will change over the next five years. The short of it is that search engines will continue to try to read our minds and go beyond what we search for to deliver what we are looking for. A great example that they give in the article is that if you’re searching for a movie that isn’t out yet the top results will be the trailer since this is what most people would be looking for in general.

Of course as Domainers it is important that you don’t base your livelihood on search engines or you’ll always be dependent on something that you can’t control. That being said, it is absolutely essential that if you’re turning your domain names into businesses that you’re making something that is relevant and useful.

No matter how you slice it, understanding the evolution of search will help you plan your own business whether that business is Domaining, developing, blogging, or launching a hot start-up because it will impact your business in many ways. While I could go-into all the details of the article you really should read it yourself! You can read the article here – Are You Ready? Why Today’s SERP Will Be Unrecognizable In 5 Years

Ok- well I think this statement is very telling and foretelling of danger, “why am I sending people away when I can provide the same content right here on the results page”. If Google starts serving up the actual content instead of the results, they’ve just created a monopoly on both search and content. Not only will they be killing off their own customers, but if the move to own that content or the revenue associated with that content, they’re headed for an anti-trust break up (via the justice department) not unlike what happen to IBM w/punch cards in the 60’s and ultimately AT&T. Doesn’t really make any sense to me…

Basically, the search engines are getting silly. They want to be search and content too.

Well, they will be shooting themselves in the foot as the advertisers, who they are forgetting pay the bills, will leave and use alternative means for advertising.

Another Google rival will emerge that will basically do what Google did in say 2005…..SEARCH RESULTS…..Duh!!! This will cause an ad money shift to the new engine. Product sellers and content providers will not sit back and let Google, Bing, and Yahoo steal their “thunder”.

If anyone has noticed yet, they are at war with not just domainers, but developers, retailers, information providers, etc….. They want to have everything that these folks have….the domain’s traffic, the developer’s technology, a big cut of the retailer’s profit instead of taking click payouts, and the content that the information providers provide.

Thing is, this is a classic case of companies trying to be too much to keep stock prices rising. It will be their ultimate downfall.

They HAVE to share the pie or the pie leaves for better opportunities. They just don’t see it that way, they want the whole pie for themselves……..domainers, developers, retailers, and content providers be dammed.

It is about to get REALLY interesting.

yes, it’ll be interesting to see what else they will come up with. Maybe when you search “blog”, they it might know that you’re a domainer and show you domain blogs 🙂
