Search Engine Land did a great article on Friday about how search will change over the next five years. The short of it is that search engines will continue to try to read our minds and go beyond what we search for to deliver what we are looking for. A great example that they give in the article is that if you’re searching for a movie that isn’t out yet the top results will be the trailer since this is what most people would be looking for in general.
Of course as Domainers it is important that you don’t base your livelihood on search engines or you’ll always be dependent on something that you can’t control. That being said, it is absolutely essential that if you’re turning your domain names into businesses that you’re making something that is relevant and useful.
No matter how you slice it, understanding the evolution of search will help you plan your own business whether that business is Domaining, developing, blogging, or launching a hot start-up because it will impact your business in many ways. While I could go-into all the details of the article you really should read it yourself! You can read the article here – Are You Ready? Why Today’s SERP Will Be Unrecognizable In 5 Years

Ok- well I think this statement is very telling and foretelling of danger, “why am I sending people away when I can provide the same content right here on the results page”. If Google starts serving up the actual content instead of the results, they’ve just created a monopoly on both search and content. Not only will they be killing off their own customers, but if the move to own that content or the revenue associated with that content, they’re headed for an anti-trust break up (via the justice department) not unlike what happen to IBM w/punch cards in the 60’s and ultimately AT&T. Doesn’t really make any sense to me…
