If You Could Run One gTLD, Which Would It Be?

Whether you think the coming wave of new gTLDs is the greatest thing since sliced bread, or if you think they’re going to ruin the Internet world forever, I want to ask you one question. Putting your differences aside, let’s bring both sides together and look as businesspeople, at the potential of a new gTLD that takes off.

Of course if I’m going to ask the question I also have to share my own pick and the reasons why. If I could run one gTLD it would be .app and here’s why. The smartphone has taken-off, there’s not debate about that, and all the programs on a smartphone are called Apps and most connect directly to the net. Everyone likes a nice simple app name like Fresh or Find or Watermelon, but not all app-makers want to shell out hundreds of thousands (or millions) of dollars to get one.

Now let me be clear. I’m not saying that one-word .COMs are going to be any less valuable, in fact I think they will go up in price over the next two years but I’ll save that for a different post. What I do think is that .app could become the go-to TLD for app-makers and since there are an insane amount of apps out there and many more coming I think there’s a lot of money to be made with this TLD.

There, now you know my top pick, if you could run one gTLD what would it be and why?

My choice would be .art. Art will never go out of style and the arts community will be drawn to, and embrace the extension in my estimation.

I agree with .app, but my 2nd choice based on potential revenue would be .online. I could see this getting over 1 million registrants in the long term and it could be used for anything, e.g. Insurance.online, MorganLinton.online, Shop.online, NikeStore.online..

My opinion is that it will be a disaster, although the two comments @ Robin and @ Adam be best if they go ahead the key body, and that doubts be above the table, they and other study analyzing how to change the system of trademarks, I think they’ve lassoed a rock and no one picks up because they can stumble on it and this is bad if the usual stumble on the same stone.

I like .app, for the same reason as yours, Morgan. I also like .home, because everyone in the world will have a personal website, probably for free from Google. Gmail, Youtube, etc will become part of your .home website offering from Google.

For me, the next big thing is .sex
The whole whole world and young generation are talking about sex…..
Sex is everywhere and it’s so common…especially for young generation….they all talked in schools, office, clubs, functions, nightclubs, parties, families, brothers, sisters, homosexual communities, gays, lesbians, politicians, religious groups….and The Views, all talk about sex, but not much in Ellen show, ….. Ellen keeps it low and quiet……which is great…..

it’s a very common conversations in communities these days…..so .sex will dominate the society regardless how old fashion you are….

Just look at TV show ….so much sex and soft porn going on….including all erotic commercial ads on TVs……

I think they are all going to fail. Every last friggin stupid one of them.

    • Morgan July 25, 2013, 11:01 am

@OldMacDonald – you know that .MOBI and .BIZ are both incredibly successful and profitable businesses right? Remember, I’m not saying pick a gTLD that you think will be a good investment as a Domainer but instead as a business owner which has the most profit potential? .BIZ and .MOBI may have never taken-off in the Domainer community but they are both very profitable businesses for the companies that operate them…

Absolutely none…..only fools rush in. That money could be invested in .com.

If I was running one I would feel like a shyster trying to sell crap to fools, yet pitching it as if it were gold. That’s not my personality. You have to be a MLM kind of person to do that.

@Raymond…..what about .XXX. Great investment? Is .sex better?

Successful for ONLY the registrars, Morgan. A nightmare for registrants.

The consensus is that those extensions are failures for registrants. I don’t think most pros, domain investors or developers, would disagree with that.

There are all kinds of worthless things you can sell to the public and make a killing, but that does not make it right because of one’s own greed.

None of new ASCII .gTLD will be grand success, but IDNs may do well. Chinese and Russian IDN gTLD would be mega hit. Because they are coming based on need to have urls totally in one language.I have some investment in Hindi IDN .com. I hope equivalent Hindi .com gTLD will have successful as well.

I need to read your blog more often 🙂

I would go for .Inc, close it down to Inc companies around the globe, build a nice search engine for it, monetize it too, create content with news from my clients (companies.inc)…etc, etc. It would be a “If it’s a real Inc, it’s a .Inc” sort of thing.
