It's 11PM and I'm sitting in the lobby of a hotel in Mexico City

So why am I sitting in the lobby you might ask? We lost power so me and a growing number of people are downstairs doing emails. I stayed in my room doing email for as long as my little battery could take – which obviously wasn’t long enough! When I asked at the front desk when they expect the power to be back on the woman shrugged her shoulders and laughed…I’m guessing that’s not a great sign.

Whenever I’m in Mexico the ccTLD part of my brain kicks-in and I start becoming very aware of what domain names people are using to brand their businesses. This time I’m really going to try to see how .mx compares to .com.mx and .com.

From what I have seen in my trips to Mexico .com is still the strongest TLD here – however I think this has a lot to do with companies that have a multi-national presence using .com domains. I think that .mx plays a similar role here as .us does in the US.

Here’s a quick example just from my hotel – I am staying at the Camino Real hotel which from what I can see has 95% of its property in Mexico – their website – www.caminoreal.com. When I type “Google.com” into my browser though it takes me to Google.com.mx not Google.mx but I’m not too surprised there since .com.mx did come first.

I’m going to be keeping my eyes open and by the end of the week I hope to have a better understanding of what the potential is for .mx here in Mexico.

So now is where you come in! I’m just visiting Mexico – if any of you live in Mexico I’d love to hear your opinion on this issue. All I can give you is my glimpse based on a week in Mexico City – if you’ve lived in Mexico for your whole life you definitely know a lot more than me and I’d like to learn from you!

As you all know (or should know by now) I’m a big .co.in and .in fan so I’m always keeping my eyes open for good potential ccTLD. .mx has been on my radar for a while now but I still don’t see any compelling evidence that makes me want to start buying.

Comment and let your voice be heard! Are we all missing the .mx boat or is this a ccTLD destined for failure in the face of .com and .co.mx?
