SEO 101: Does The Number Of Years A Domain Is Registered Impact Search Rankings?

This is probably one of the most common SEO questions I get asked being that I do SEO and I’m in the Domain Industry. A lot of confusion has come-up recently as companies like Network Solutions have mounted PR campaigns claiming that if customers register a domain for multiple years, they’ll rank better in search engines.

Well I’ve been telling people this is a bunch of hooey for a while now so thought it would be a good topic to cover on my blog in my SEO 101 series. So let’s settle this one and put your mind at rest, the number of years a domain name is registered for does not impact how well it will rank. So you don’t have to rush-out and renew your domains for ten years, renewing every year or renewing for multiple years won’t make much of a difference.
