Popular website building platform Squarespace.com announced that starting today you can buy domain names directly through the service. Initially the company will be offering over 200 TLDs and it’s likely that number will grow over time.

“We’re thrilled to announce the launch of Squarespace Domains, the newest way for anyone with an idea to get started with Squarespace. For more than a decade, we’ve been the premier choice for building beautiful websites. Now, if you have an idea but you’re not quite ready to create a website, you can browse over 200 top-level domains and purchase your domain directly from us.” (Source – Squarespace Blog)

It is surprising that Squarespace hasn’t made this move sooner given how many people go to them first for a website and then somewhere else to register the domain (or vice-versa). The registrar world is heating up with players like Google, Squarespace, and many more entering the ring consumers have more options than ever when it comes to registering a domain name.

My question always is, how good of a registrar will a company be when it’s not the main focus of their business? That’s what I like about companies like Uniregistry and NameCheap – their focus is being a great registrar. Still – the domain world is growing by leaps and bounds so it’s no surprise to see others jumping in the ring.

One thing is certain, the whole world is catching onto what’s happening in the domain name space, and that is good news for many of us.
