StuffOnMyCat.com Sells for $7,500 on Flippa

The popular online website sales marketplace Flippa sold a pretty unique online business yesterday with StuffOnMyCat.com selling for $7,500. Okay, so what the heck does that even mean? If you have a cat you may have done this once or twice:

Yes, you guessed it, this is a website dedicated to photographs of people putting stuff on their cat. It looks like the site started with a focus on stacking household objects onto your cat, and then, like most cat sites, evolved into just a stream of cat pictures. So yes, someone out there took the time to build this site and create a huge fanbase around the concept of, uh, putting things on your cats and taking pictures of it to share with the world…

Okay, so it’s a bit of a weird site but the creators have managed to get over 15,000 fans on Facebook giving this brand some serious social media power. The site currently gets about 25,000 unique visitors a month and 125,000 pageviews…yes, doing the math, every visitor, on average, looks at five pages of cat pictures. Still that’s a nice amount of traffic and a huge social media following and the Facebook account is included in the sale.

This sale also includes StuffOnMyMutt.com – a site with the same idea except applied to dogs. This is another great example of a Flippa sale where the brand outweighed the revenue. While the site does have good traffic it doesn’t have incredible revenue. However, what’s there is a brand, a site with a ton of content (plus another 2,000 images provided by the seller), a target market, over 15,000 fans, and a way to monetize traffic.

What I think is great about a sale like this is it shows that there are buyers out there in every niche, even something like a site all about putting things on your cat. However I think a key piece of the puzzle here is the 15,000 Facebook fans and 125,000 pageviews. That is a nice, established social media presence and meaningful level of traffic. Building-up that many Facebook fans and traffic is a lot of work and with a fan-base that you can constantly share new content with I see this as a business with lots of room to grow.

Just another example of a mediocre domain name being coupled with targeted content and social media to build a brand with real value. Okay, now I know what you are going to do next…you want to check-out StuffOnMyCat.com – don’t do it, save yourself and go spend your Friday night on the town, do not be lulled-into looking at cat pictures. Too late?
