The Difference Between Giving Advice and Sharing Experiences

I thought now would be a good time to write a post about a topic that can easily be misunderstood in the Blogging and Domaining world, the difference between giving advice and sharing experiences. Let’s rewind to 2007 when I started my blog – I actually never thought anyone would read my blog, I was writing it more as a log of what I was trying and my experiences in the Domaining industry. Very early on I started receiving comments on my blog and I realized how fun it was to speak to an audience.

Now let’s fast-forward to 2011. I’ve learned a lot, made a ton of mistakes, had some great successes, and through all of it shared these experiences on my blog. However I think that sometimes people think that blogs in general are advice from experts…and I’m here to say that’s not the case, at least when it comes to my blog.

I am all about sharing experiences. When I use a service that I like a lot, saves me time, and helps me make some money – I share it. If I make a mistake, fail at doing something, or just can’t figure something out, I share that too. When I make a great sale, build a great brand, or attend an amazing conference, I share that as well. Remember, this blog is called MorganLinton.com not DomainPro.com or DomainExpert.com so please don’t take everything that I say as expert advice, just know that I’m a guy who is sharing his experiences because I love Domain Investing, love the Startup space, and absolutely love sharing my experiences.

If you haven’t had a chance to yet, please make sure to read my About Me page. I’m always amazed at how many people email me saying that they read my blog every day yet they ask some question that clearly shows they’ve never read my “about me” page that explains who I am and what I do. You’ll see that I’m a normal guy just like the rest of you who set a goal, hit it, and found this industry to be exciting and lucrative, so have stayed in it and continue to learn, grow, and develop in the space.

When I talk about buying expired domains, building brands, selling domains, etc. this is just me sharing my experiences – what has worked for me and what hasn’t. We all have different goals, what is important is that you set solid goals and do everything you can to hit them. Personally I have always had the goal of making enough money with domain names that I could cover all my expenses so if I lose my job tomorrow I can still afford everything we have and do. I hit that goal and have created a new goal…this doesn’t have to be your goal though. You may just want to make some extra income, maybe an additional $500/month is what you want – great, set that goal and do everything you can to hit it.

Just understand that there is a difference between giving advice and sharing experiences. In my book – The Domain Investing Handbook – I give advice, it’s a book that really sums-up what I’ve learned since 2007. On my blog I share my experiences so in realtime you can follow what I’m doing, my successes and my failures. My readership spans from entrepreneurs, to traditional investors, Domainers to IT professionals, it’s a diverse audience with varying levels of experience in different areas. I do my best to write posts that give a little something to everyone and since I’m involved in a lot of different areas there is a lot to share!

So if you haven’t had the chance yet, read my About Me page and learn a bit about who I am. For over 60 hours a week I work for one of the most incredible music companies on the planet. I absolutely love music and managing the International business for a truly game-changing company has been a dream come true. I’m not the kind of guy who would be happy sitting in front of a computer all day, I love to travel too much! I do commit a minimum of four hours a day to Linton Investments but a majority of my business is now run by wonderful people I have been hiring since 2009 when I realized there weren’t enough hours in the day to do what I wanted to do!

My blog is probably the biggest loss-leader for me, it’s where I make the least amount of money for my time, but I write my blog because I love writing and sharing my experiences. Just remember, this blog has been and always will be about sharing my experiences, understand that there is a difference between this and giving advice so don’t take my experiences as expert advice. Read my about page, understand who I am and I hope you’ll continue to enjoy my adventures, I’ve got big plans in this life and the adventure is only beginning, hang-on, it’s going to be a wild ride 🙂

As always feel free to comment and let your voice be heard!
