The end of an era, AT&T sells Prodigy.com

If you’re like me (aka old) then you remember Prodigy, an online service that existed before the Internet that you connected to using a modem. At the time, it was revolutionary, you could play games, message other people (early email) and do things on another computer that wasn’t your own, from the comfort of your own home.

Here’s what the login screen for Prodigy looked like:

I know what you’re thinking, whoa – look at all those colors! At the time, this was about as flashy as you could get. One of my favorite things to do on Prodigy was to play Where in the World is Carmen San Diego, a game that I credit with both spurring my interest in computer and videos games.

And because I know you’re dying to see it…here’s what the game looked like on Prodigy:

Well, as you all know, Prodigy is no more, and hasn’t been a thing for some time. America Online (AOL) came in and ate their lunch and as they say, the rest is history.

This morning I was going through my Twitter feed when I noticed a tweet from Jamie from DotWeekly:

It looks like this famous domain name will be put to good use as the new home of education company Prodigy Education. The acquisition and name change was announced in a press release back in August, here’s what the CEO had to say about the move:

“Now more than ever, we must continue to support educators, parents and students in their learning journeys given the uncertainty around the upcoming back-to-school season,” says Rohan Mahimker, founder and co-CEO of Prodigy Education. “The exciting changes we’re making will be a new guiding light on our path to transform learning and become a global leader in education.”(Source – PRNewswire)

Congrats to Prodigy Education on the new name and thanks to Jamie for noticing this, it really brought me back!
