The Importance of Backlinks and Anchor Text

One of the best ways to increase the value of your domain is building backlinks. For those completely new to the domaining world Backlinks are simply other websites that link to your site.

As many of you know, Google's search algorithm uses backlinks as a key indicator as to the relevancy of your website. Not only does Google use the backlinks, but it also pays attention to the anchor text used in the link itself. If you aren't familiar with anchor text make sure to read Alan from WhyPark's article, Make sure to describe your website with good anchor text links.

Building backlinks might seem like a chore at first, but if you take the right steps there are ways to help automate the process. First, make sure you have an easy way for people to add your site to services like StumbleUpon and Delicious – these are great ways to get links to your site growing organically.

Here's an example of good anchor text I could use with a domain of mine, Kayaking.org in the context of an online article.

Kayaking is a fun sport and easy for the entire family. Sea Kayaking is popular all over the world and gives adrenaline junkies the edge they are looking for all while staying within the realm of Kayaking. Other serious kayakers prefer whitewater kayaking and the rush of navigating down the rapids of a rushing river.

If you are just getting started with Kayaking there are lots of places online to buy kayaking equipment so online so make sure to do your homework and get the best price possible. You can also get kayaking tips from professional kayakers that share some of their strategies and ideas to help beginners get started.

That's it! Not the best written article in the world, but, it has solid anchor text and discuses the subject of kayaking. It took about two minutes to write these two paragraphs so in under an hour you could easily have a full-fledged article ready for distribution across the Internet.

As your backlinks grow so will your ranking within search engines like Google. By using services that allow other people to easy add a link to your site you can help automate the process and get more links to your site faster!

I would like to thanks Alan from WhyPark for inspiring me to write this post. Have a great weeekend everyone and happy flipping!

From an SEO perspective you would be much better pointing those links to pages within your site instead of all to the home page.
For example the text Sea Kayaking would link to http://www.kayaking.org/sea-kayaking/
