The Power Of The Pivot – From Teaching Kids Math To Starting Optimizely

Ah the pivot, it probably has become the most-used word in the startup world. In fact it’s become so commonly used that it’s often used wrong when startups talk about an iteration. Done correctly a pivot can create an incredibly successful business, pivot in the wrong direction and you run your company into the ground.

I always like to hear of massive pivots that resulted in insanely successful businesses. One of the best pivot stories I’ve come across is that of Optimizely, an incredibly cool tool for A/B testing that started as an education website to teach kids math. After the founders joined Y Combinator they killed their first idea, pivoted and built what has become one of the best startup success stories of the decade.

TechCrunch recently sat down with Optimizely co-founder Pete Koomen to tell his founder story. It’s a great story and an awesome video, you can check it out here.
