The top seller on Squadhelp sold 13 domains for $439,842

This weekend I was looking at some of the stats on other sellers in my Squadhelp dashboard and I quickly found myself pouring through data in the leaderboards tables. If you don’t know where this is, when you login to Squadhelp just head over to the “Marketplace Dashboard” and scroll down a bit.

The leaderboards are divided into two sections – overall sales, and sell-through rate and average sale price. I went through the top three people on each list and learned some interesting things, and as usual – when I learn something interesting, I like sharing it with all of you!

To start, let’s talk about the headline of my post – the top seller in dollar amount over the last year who sold 13 domains for $439,842, i.e. an average sales price of $33,834 per domain.

The first question that popped into my head when I started to dive into the data was, how many contests did Internet Brands enter in order to get sales like this. As many people know, Squadhelp isn’t just about having great domains on the platform, it’s also about getting those names in front of buyers via contents. Here’s the data for Internet Brands over the last six months:

My first takeaway from this data is that you have to enter a lot of contests if you want to sell names in this price range. Summarizing the data above, 932 contests were entered over the last six months and three domains sold as a result – that’s a 0.32% sell through rate.

This made me interested in looking at data from another seller who also was on the leaderboard but with a much lower ASP. Here’s a high-level overview on the other seller, Names Company:

Doing the math here Name Company’s average sale price is right around $2,000, a lot less than the $33k that Internet Brands is seeing. So how many contests did they enter you ask? Here’s the data:

Name Company didn’t enter any contests in May or June, and hence, no sales. In July through October they entered 126 contests and sold one domain for a sell through rate of 0.8%.

No matter how you slice and dice the data one key lesson I learned from these two Squadhelp superstars is that you need to enter a lot of contests if you want to sell your names. In both cases you’ll notice the most sales happened in the months where they entered the most contests.

While there’s a lot more data to run through, I’ll save that for a future post. I think it’s pretty awesome that Squadhelp makes this data available, I definitely have a lot more to study and learn from. As usual, as I learn, I’ll share it here with all of you!
