This guy is hand-registering a bunch of .CX domains…

Dosebuy Domains

Every once and awhile (okay more than that) someone jumps into the domain name world, ignore all the advice experienced investors give, and try to forge their own path. I’m all for trying new things but I’m not crazy about repeating other people’s mistakes.

One of the great things about the domain investing world is that there are resources like DomainSherpa and DNAcademy that can help new domain investors get started on the right foot.

For me and many other domain investors, hand registering a bunch of random domains that we “thought” would be worth a fortune was our first mistake. In any new market, just jumping in and spending money often ends in, well, losing money.

The people I’ve seen excel at domain investing are those who take the time to listen, read, and learn. In many cases they don’t repeat other’s mistakes and actually end up starting out with some pretty solid investments. Two great examples here are Josh Reason and Josh Schoen. Both Josh’s are buying really solid domains and they really took the time to learn the market before diving in.

Then there’s DoseBuy. Now before I go any further I want to say, the point of this post is not to be mean or make fun of Johan, the man behind DoseBuy. I think it’s great that he’s publicly sharing his journey in the domain world with all of us.

That being said, I see him repeating mistakes that so many new domain investors have made, and he doesn’t seem to care what people think, he’s just forging ahead on his own path. Johan’s focus has been hand-registering domains and he’s picking up some TM violations and some really long weird names like CanItBeConfirmed.com.

Lately he’s been tweeting quite a bit about the one word .CX domains he’s been registering. I’ll be honest…I’ve never heard of .CX, and there’s a good chance you haven’t either. Which is why I’m also not surprised that a bunch of one-word .CX domains were available.

As you can see from the image at the top of this post, today Johan tweeted some of his .CX domains to President Trump in an attempt to start a vote and retweet campaign on Twitter…so far no takers.

Like I said above, I appreciate Johan sharing what he’s doing, but I hope at some point he takes the time to go through Michael Cyger’s DNAcademy as I think it will save him a lot of money down the road. Buying 10 .CX names costs around $200 and I think it’s safe to say one expired two-word .COM for $200 would very likely produce a much higher ROI, but to each their own.

Of course maybe I’m missing the boat here. Maybe .CX is the next big thing and Johan is sitting on a goldmine…okay, I’m being sarcastic there. Still, since I think Johan will be reading this I want to tell him – keep on being yourself and doing what you want to do. Just know that registering Trademarks isn’t a great idea and hand registering domains tends to be a money loser unless you really know what you’re doing. I would be happy to pay for admission to DNAcademy if you’d like – in the end I think you probably could make good money in domains because you’re clearly interested in the space.

If you want to take a look at Johan’s portfolio it is available here – https://dosebuy.com/portfolio

Now it’s your turn. What do you think? I want to hear from you, comment and let your voice be heard!

I don’t know anything about the cx guy, but if he’s made a sale that covers his registration costs… Then good for him. Especially if he’s happy doing it.

Snoopy, people are making money with some gTLDs and .uks. really not sure why the immediate and relentless campaign you have against them. Please can you state your bias and motives.

Are you trying to protect people from investing in new Gs? If so your messages don’t read like that. You speak about these folks investing in new Gs as though you think they’re stupid, not the type of folks you care about and need to save.

Are you trying to protect your own .com investment and you’re trying to hold back gTLDs from taking root with end users? This appears to be more likely but I have to tell ya, you aren’t strong enough to change the market, it’ll decide for itself.

C’mon, state your bias and motivations.

In the interest of adding some balance…
He has sold a cx domain for $300 which has more than covered his costs.
Cx is an actual thing, a massively growing industry just google it
There are cx companies actively using cx domains summit.cx for example
For someone in the business less than 3 months he is making a splash, as they say no publicity is bad publicity and he has already had more articles published about him than lots who have been doing this for years! He may be one to watch for the future

    Hello.

Thanks for an interesting yet slightly condecending read.
I do listen alot on what other domainers are saying. And some things I take with me, other things I dont.
For example the .cx. I have regged 18 of them and already have 1 sold for 300 so Im in the clear there. The connection that sale made me is about to give me another $1800 in sales. So Im not crying about that one.
The tweet to Trump was a joke and a bet I did with a guy inside Daryl Lopez Telegram group.

In 3 months of domaining I have made 18 sales and have secured my renewal fees. So rest of the year is a bonus.

I am very careful about respecting experienced domainers. But like in all industries experience does not equal greatness. I read alot of ”oooh if I could just have regged LLL back in the day”. ”Oooh if I had jumped on the Bitcoin bandwagon”. So im more than willing to play the lottery for a while.

Thanks for thinking about me so much though so you had to write an article about me.

    1 more thing:

CanItBeConfirmed.com was my first regged domain and was developed as a joke for a friend that always had to Google shit with words he used to get his opinion through. So was making fun of him with that one.

Well, thanks again and good luck on your Journey also. See you at the top.

    Best Regards

    /Johan

@Johan – thanks for sharing and my apologies if this came off as condecending, that was not my intent. I appreciate you sharing your results publicly and am glad to hear you’ve covered your costs on your names, nothing wrong with that.

Like I said, I’m always concerned when I see people registering Trademark violations, I’ve seen people lose a lot of money when a company comes after them so I’d just be incredibly careful here especially with Google TMs.

Maybe we could do an interview on my blog where you share what you’ve done so far and we can talk about all the good things? I’m all about balance, I’ll shoot you an email and let’s see if we can put something together.

Why do people feel the need to be rude to a newcomer who is just trying to learn the game?

My guess is that you’re all frustrated at your own lack of success in the domain game so you’re taking that pent up frustration out, rather than show actual constructive criticism.

Congrats on the sales Johan. 18 sales in 3 months of domaining is truly impressive (way better than I did!), and glad that your $300 .cx sale has essentially paid for your other 18 .cx acquisitions. I know nothing about .cx, but it seems to me that we should be respectful and positive to people who are trying new things, keeping records, and sharing the information. After reading this thread I did look on Dofo how many .cx are for sale (3938). So while the NameBio number of sales in .cx is limited, so is the competition from others trying to sell in the extension. Sometimes it can work out taking paths in domaining not many are taking (and sometimes it does not and there are good reasons others ignored that path). I wish you the very best going forward.
    Bob
