To Me, Vine Is About Sharing Moments

Vine has taken off and like most new social media services it takes a bit of getting used to. If you haven’t heard of Vine, it’s a new video sharing service from the makers of Twitter. As a very active Twitter user and a video nut I had to check-out vine, and I have to say I am very impressed with the service but have talked to many people who don’t seem to get it yet…so I thought I’d share what Vine means to me and why I think it’s a big deal.

Vine helps you capture moments in a whole new way by making it quick and easy to share videos no longer than six-seconds. At first you might think that six seconds isn’t enough time to capture anything, but once you start using it, you’ll see that it’s plenty of time. What you have to compare this to is a picture. A picture is a great way to capture a moment, but a video is an even better way.

I’ll give you an example from this morning. I was standing in front of our condo taking some photos/video, here’s a photo:

MarinaDelRey_Boats

A beautiful sunny day on the Marina! This photo shows what I see, but it doesn’t capture the moment. Now watch the six second video I posted on Vine, sharing the same moment, but this time as a video rather than a photo:

(Click the UnMute button at the top to fully experience the moment, hear the seal?)

Do you see how this does a better job of capturing the moment? No, it’s not You Tube and I can’t post a ten minute video of me walking around the entire marina narrating as I go, that’s not what Vine’s about. Instead Vine allows you to share moments in a whole new way.

Like any tool, you can use Vine as you like. Some people get artistic with it, others focus on sharing a cool event or location. A picture is worth a thousand words, and I think a video is worth a thousand pictures. Most of us now walk around with HD Video Cameras in our pockets, why not use them to share moments in a whole new way?
