Top Five Domaining Events Of 2009: From Nipplegate to Halvarez

First let me say – wow! It has been an amazing year in the Domaining world. A lot has happened this year and I thought now would be the best time to review some of the highlights and give some initial thoughts on how to stay ahead of the pack in 2010. I’m going to stick to five events that I thought really stood-out in 2009. Of course there’s a lot more that happened this year but one of my big goals for the year was to stay focused…so let’s go for five!

  1. March 9th, 2009 – Rick Latona launches ccTLDs.com, a forum dedicated to ccTLDs
  2. June 16th, 2009 – Rick Latona announces partnership with Rick Schwartz and Howard Neu on the TRAFFIC shows, six shows announced for 2010 starting in Vegas
  3. July 13th, 2009 – Bido opens-up their platform to support multiple domain auctions per day
  4. September 18th, 2009 – Chef Patrick “Nipplegate” Video shocks Domainers
  5. November 4th, 2009 – “Halvarez” Bidding Scandal rocks the Domaining world

That’s my top five – now please feel free to share your own!

So what can we learn from these events? A lot…here are my initial thoughts:

  1. ccTLDs are getting bigger every year – there is a BIG future in this space – now is the time to buy!
  2. The TRAFFIC conferences are getting a face-lift and with it hopefully encouraging more people to attend the events and grow the industry
  3. Bido has made some great moves to revolutionize how we buy and sell domains online…still there are improvements to be made but off to a great start
  4. Some of us like nipples…others are offended by them (for the record – I like them!)
  5. Our industry will have its share of greed and foul-play – it is important for each of us to remain aware and do our best to make the industry a better place

That’s it folks – have a Happy New Year and please feel free to share your own list of the top five events from 2009!

Social media usage explodes – trying to find recent stats on Twitter membership / visitors – Alexa or Quantcast I suppose gives you an idea. If you have an online business, can you afford to ignore social media marketing?

Before nipplegate, I rather admired Chef Patrick, but afterwards, I lost all respect for him and almost never go on his site anymore .

What he did was just plain crude, juvenile, and totally unprofessional. It’s no wonder that outsiders see domainers as a bunch of spoiled boys stuck in a circle jerk.

This stunt just demonstrates how much he disrespects women.

I appreciate the comment @Ms Domainer but think you’ve got Patrick all wrong! Patrick is an incredible Father and Husband which both his kids and wife would attest to. Patrick definitely does not disrespect women and I know for a fact that the woman in the video has a lot of respect for herself and did not feel at all take advantage of by Patrick.

I’m hoping you’ll give the Chef a second chance – he’s a great person and has done a lot for the industry. Just my two cents – as I’ve always said everyone is entitled to their own opinion 🙂

Thank you very much Morgan for the honor of Bido being mixed in your top five events in the domaining industry in 2009. We appreciate the recognition very much, its humbling and energizing to receive the honor and respect of our peers and those we do business with. We have some more polishing to do and more modules of our platform that we are working on and excited to release soon. It’s a work in progress, and like you stated, it’s a start. Thanks again and have a healthy, prosperous, and wonderful New Year from all of us here at Bido.
    Regards,
    Jarred

Thanks for the comment @Jarred – Bido is already changing the way people buy and sell domains. I appreciate all the time and energy you have put-into it – it is clear that you care about your customers and about making the industry a better place! Happy New Year Jarred – 2010 is going to be a GREAT year!

    Ms Domainer…

I read this quote today and it seems fitting. I’d rather be hated for who I am than loved for who I am not.

Sex sells, our industry is made up of mostly men. Every industry uses sex, from soft drinks to automobiles. The “nipplegate” video has had thousands of views and I’m sure reached hundreds if not thousands outside of our industry. From the feedback I’ve received on and offline, by both men and women, it’s been great.

I think it is a real shame that one post out of over 400 has turned you away from my site. My contributions to the industry should not be defined by one act but the accumulation of everything I have done and continue to do.

I’d love to have you back 🙂
