Trend Domaining 101: Top Five Places to Spot 2010 Trends

As 2009 comes to a close it’s time to start picking the hot trends for 2010. Trend Domaining can be a lucrative yet secrative business since there are a limited number of domains that can provide the best-fit keywords for a particular trend. I’ve spent a lot of time identifying trends in 2009 and ALL of them have been profitable most in the 500% or more ROI range. My most profitable trends for 2009 were based around the following keywords – “BailOut”, “Stimulus”, and several keywords in the auto sector.
I have already identified some hot trends for 2010 however as with trend Domaining I’ll wait until I’ve finished making my purchases before sharing my top picks. What I am happy to share is WHERE I look for these trends. It is also essential to realize that trends are seasonal! There are different trends in Q1 and Q4 and different strategies for each.
Never rush-into a trend. Instead buy one domain with the top keywords in the trend, build a one-page site on the domain, and see if the trend is really as hot as you think. If the trend is hot that simple one-page site should get some traffic and revenue in a fairly short period of time. Otherwise, let it sit and once it hits – you know you have a good trend. If this sounds too good to be true – it’s not…but if it hasn’t happened to you yet then you may just be focusing on weak trends.
Below is a list of the top five places I look to find trends:
1) News (newspaper, online, television)
2) Business Magazines (around this time they will even have issues with a focus on spotting 2010 trends…just look at Entrepreneur Magazine)
3) Google Trends
4) Friends and Family (pay attention to the expertise of people you know)
5) Blogs (Don’t look for hot trends on Domaining blogs – look for experts in an industry to tell you what’s on the radar for next year)
