As someone that has had their blog injected with nasty spam links I know how painful and annoying this can be. Today WordPress has released a new update and Domainers with WordPress sites should make sure to update their installations ASAP.
This is one of the good and bad things about WordPress. There’s a team of people improving the system over time, but at the same time there are people trying to break the system. When you’re developing your own website using static HTML this is never a concern, even most PHP sites have little to worry about as long as they are following best practices – hackers don’t want to go after one site, they want to go after many.
Since there are millions of WordPress sites, online hackers and spammers use exploits to gain access to your blog and oftentimes add links back to their site. The terrible thing about this is that those links can oftentimes hurt your SEO. Why? Well if they are well known spam sites Google may assume that sites linking to them area also spam!
So I’m not trying to scare you, but I am trying to warn you – upgrade now and keep your blog secure! If you want to learn more about plugins that can secure WordPress make sure to check-out my previous post – 4 Plugins to Secure WordPress.
