Value Your Time

Value Your Time

When I first started Linton Investments my goal was to make $500/month. I was able to reach this goal, but it was taking 10+ hours/week to do it. At that time I was making over $100/hour at my day job so spending 40 hours a month to make $500 meant I was making $12.50/hour Domaining – needless to say, not a great way to get paid for my time. That was when I realized that I had to find a way to either make more money with domains, or spend less time, otherwise I would not be valuing my time.

Time is the most valuable things that you have, period. For me, I find the best thing I can do with my time is spend it with Daina, my family, and my friends. Anything else I’m doing is a less-valuable way to spend my time. Yes, I love startups, I love Domains, I love the beach and jogging, but the most valuable use of my time is spending it with the people I care about. This is one of the reasons why I love conferences like TRAFFIC because I get to combine all of these together – I’m spending time with Daina, hanging-out with good friends, talking domains, and closing deals that make money, all at the same time.

At my last job I found myself and many of my co-workers valuing work or travel above spending time with family and friends. People would brag about how much time they would spend at the office, or how they were always on a plane. I can still remember bragging to people about how I had been traveling for a month straight. No more. Now I value my time and that means spending as much of my time as possible with the love of my life, Daina, and spending as much time as possible with my family and my friends.

To make that happen Daina and I both quit our day jobs (PhD in Daina’s case!) and now work together every single day. This might not work for every couple, but for us, it’s a dream come true and the best way to really value our time. With Linton Investments I hired great people and am constantly doing everything I can to keep them inspired and enjoying what they do. I look forward to Monday’s and TGIF doesn’t really make any sense to me any more, I’m not an employee, I don’t dread work and I don’t live for the weekends.

Whether you are buying and selling domain names, developing a cool iPhone app, or writing the novel of your dreams, make sure you value your time. The moment you find yourself bragging about how much time you spend away from your family and friends is the moment you know your values are upside down.

On that note, we’re off to the beach. We try to work at the beach at least one day a week and with high speed Internet thanks to TWC we get lightning fast Internet and a view from our office that’s hard to beat!
