Weekend Musings

Austin Texas

Hello, happy Sunday, and welcome to my weekend musings. The last week was one of the busiest weeks of the last decade. Techstars, as a startup accelerator is doing exactly what I had imagined, accelerating us by thrusting us into the heart of the Austin startup, VC, and angel investing scene.

It’s intense. We have a minimum of 6 meetings a day and over the last three weeks we have met with more investors and successful startup founders than I have in the last five years. Information overload? Yes, but in a very good way.

As for Austin I have officially fallen in love with the city. Whole Foods has become just about a daily destination (they have their HQ in Austin and Flagship store two blocks from our apartment) and there are multiple startup events happening every single night. This evening after spending most of the day working (yes we do work just about every minute of every day) we took a bike ride along the Colorado River, the photo above was taken along the way.

While I have tons of exciting updates I have to get ready for tomorrow’s meetings and some of the important work we are doing with some of our latest pilot customers. There are now over 70 people on-deck who want to use Fashion Metric to decrease returns, increase conversions, or improve their existing design patterns. There aren’t enough hours in the day and yes we are hiring.

As for domain names, I’ll be honest, this really isn’t a big part of my life any more. Thanks to Matt (VP of Linton Investments) and our team my domain business is growing but I’m not involved too much any more. I still spend plenty of money on domains, we sell and broker names every month but its grown as a business that doesn’t need my direct involvement as much any more.

My focus now and for the foreseeable future isn’t ten things, it’s one thing, Fashion Metric. Of course you’ve probably noticed I’m still blogging every single day (except some weekends), I absolutely love blogging and don’t plan on ever stopping. What you probably will notice is that my blog content will focus more and more on the world of startups and investing since that’s where my focus is.

One of the biggest lessons I learned over the last five years is that you can do ten things pretty well or one thing really well. So while you might not see me at conferences as much as you used to, and you won’t see me on forums or at MeetUp groups, I’m still here, watching from the sidelines as we work hard to build a company that we think will change the world.

Too many musings? By now you know that when I have things on my mind, I put them here, and for those of you who have been reading my blog for the last 7 years you know I hold nothing back. My readership has grown considerably over the last two years and now I have more startup founders, angel investors, and venture capitalists reading my blog than ever before. These are exciting times and as usual, I look forward to sharing my adventures with all of you.
