Weekend Musings + The Best Thai Basil Chicken in Austin

2nd Street Austin

Hello, happy Saturday, and welcome to my weekend musings. As I’ve said probably about 100 times now, I absolutely love Austin, from great music, to great food, amazing people and a startup scene that is growing like crazy, I’m really feeling like this is home.  The photo above is from 2nd street which is a block from our house, one of our local spots to grab coffee or a bite to eat while heading to or from the office.

This week was incredibly intense with our last week of back-to-back mentor meetings at Techstars. Over the last month we have met with over 80 people, VC’s, Angel Investor, successful entrepreneurs with multiple exits, founders of companies with hundreds of employees, it has been amazing.

Of course it’s also pretty overwhelming as we’ve added 6-8 meetings a day to our already jam-packed schedule but I’ve just learned to live with a little less sleep and a lot more coffee! We have another busy week ahead and will actually be working all day Sunday so this will be our one day of downtime, but I wouldn’t have it any other day and we are loving every minute of this experience.

One thing that has really impressed me about Austin is the food trucks. I used to think of food trucks as low-quality, greasy food, and while of course that still exists, Austin is famous for incredible food trucks, some that even win culinary awards! My absolute favorite has become Dawn’s Thai Kitchen on Rainey Street.

Dawn's Thai Chicken

For those who don’t know, I am a huge fan of Thai food, but I’m also incredibly picky having traveled all over Asia for years while I was working for Sonos. Basil Chicken is my favorite, which also means it’s the dish I am the most picky about. I heard good things about Dawn’s so thought I would try it out, and I’ll be honest, it’s the best I have ever had, period, anywhere in the world.

So the owner and I are now on a first-name basis (his name is Al) and I often order an extra Basil Chicken to go just to throw in the fridge and eat during the week. If you ever come to Austin this is a must.

Okay, now it’s time to get ready for the day, I hope you’re all having a great start to your weekend!
