Weird – I just met a founder at Dreamforce 2018 who would rather have a .LY than a .COM

So Dreamforce is here in SF which means that 180,000 people have descended on a city with a population of 870,000 – in short, that’s a lot of people. While I’m not attending the conference I got invited to a pretty fun party on a boat hosted by and Betts Recruiting (feels right to give a shot out to them right?). Here’s a few shots from the boat:

Okay, so now back to the topic of this post. One of the people I spoke to on the boat is the founder of a company who currently owns their name in .AI. Their company name happens to end in LY and I asked him if he had ever tried to get the .COM. What he told me was pretty surprising, “I don’t care much about the .COM, it’s the .LY that I really want.”

Now let me say two things:

  1. This definitely is not the norm. I can tell you that 99.9% of startups would prefer to have their .COM
  2. .LY isn’t a particularly popular extension from what I’ve seen but this startup happened to have their name end in LY

Still, I told the founder, well you should really get the .COM, sure get the .LY, but people are going to end up going to the .COM and emailing the .COM so you really need to have that. He didn’t budge – “nope” he said, “I just want the .LY, I could care less about the .COM”

It was one of the more interesting conversations I’ve had with a startup founder about domains so I thought I’d share it with the rest of you. What do you think? I want to hear from you, comment and let your voice be heard!

    If it was a public company I’d tell you to short his stock! If I was an employee of that company I’d be looking for another job.

    I think if you can’t get the .com for your baby AND you’re not a domain investor, one sometimes tends to make up more and more reasons in their head on why they don’t need the .com.

    I’ve had friends like that, where I can’t convince them, perhaps because they’re looking for more supporting evidence for their actions, not to learn about the market or world which might help them plan better for the future.

    .LY makes it harder to spell over the phone, too. You dont’ have to remind them 1. to not put a .com at the end and 2. to put a dot in the middle of your business name.

    I was going to recommend someone register a .ly since their name ended in that and they had no budget to buy my .com but i typed it in and it just looked..stupid. and how do you say part of a word,put a dot in it and then say l-y?

    Bitly used a (.ly) and it backfired on them (and others). Morgan’s associate should read about the Libyan (.ly) risk?:

    I like the companies that use ( Weebly, Bitly, Grammarly, Streamly, Cashly, etc. Hopefully, I can sell in the future.

    Based on my experience with domains not securing exact matching .com will pose huge risk on business , for example last week I was checking my catch all mail id inbox and found lot of emails on matching .com domain with invoices, credit card details, meeting notes etc which will be huge risk on the business, from the founder perspective who doesnt have matching .com their mindset that I have domain and website doesnt need .com its not that simple I have experienced twice one with the multicountry operations company based out Barcelona which was selling photo booth vending machine with domain extension .es I have approached them to buy exact match .com that US operations head told me that he will give $50 I told him even though I bought this on auction with more price I let it drop or sell it to peanuts not to u and I did that last month sold to fellow domainer[he thought he can sell this to them , may be not sure] , another experience was with publicly trading Taiwan chip maker were their domain name has hypen with out their full business name they were saying we are happy with the current domain name sooner or later their confidential email will get leak then they will realize the value of .com

    I agree that when you do rebranding its not easy but if you do it correctly it will increase your word of mouth organically, if someone agree to do rebrand and upgrade the names atleast they should pay the domainer who spent their time and effort to secure the domain and ready to give it to you.

    I agree with him, I don’t know what’s the name but .ly makes name smaller so names like or sounds cool and shorter than and
