What is the definition of Domaining? Do we all agree?

Lately there has been a lot of discussion about Domain Development vs. Buying Domains for the purpose of re-selling for a higher price. I currently buy some domains to re-sell and other to monetize through development. However is the development portion of the business really “Domaining” or is it simply web development? What I will say is that there seems to be a bit of confusion in the industry and I think it comes down to the definition of the word “Domaining.”

I have always thought of Domaining as the business of buying, selling, developing, and monetizing domain names for a profit.

I think of Domainers as Domain Investors – we invest in domain names and whether it is through re-sale or development the goal is to buy a domain name as an investment. An investment is something that pays you, so whether you make money selling or developing, if you’re making money as a result of buying a domain wouldn’t that make you an investor?

I hope this post doesn’t come-off as controversial. I’m a nice guy to the core so not trying to stir the pot. What I am trying to do is put-out a good question that deserves a definitive answer. What is the definition of Domaining?

We all read Domaining.com religiously (or at least I do – thanks Francois!) but do we all agree on what the definition of Domaining is?

So comment and share your definition of Domaining – I’ll be interested to see if we all agree or if each of us has a different definition of the word!
