Who Will Be The Google Of Apps? Kite.io Acquired by Quixey

Yes, it’s pretty hard for a week to go by without another company that brands on .IO either raising their next round, or getting acquired by Silicon Valley favorites like Quixey. This week Kite.io, a competing app search engine was acquired by Quixey, a startup that has raised $75M so far and is not slowing down anytime soon.

It’s no secret that apps aren’t going anywhere. They are here to stay and the ecosystem around apps is growing faster than ever before. Being the Google of Apps is a pretty desirable place to be and right now Quixey looks like they are the most-likely to earn that title.

Congrats to the Kite.io team, it’s great to see talented entrepreneurs execute on an idea and turn it into something great. Ten years ago that innovation happened only on .COM, .NET and .ORG, now it’s happening on .CO, .IO, .ME and many other TLDs to come. It’s only a matter of time before we starting reading about startups branding on .CLUB, .LINK, .XYZ, .GURU and many more.

At the end of the day it’s all about execution, and we live in a time where that execution can happen across a whole range of TLDs.

Have you ever tried giving a .io email address to the hostess at a restaurant while making a dinner reservation? Give it a shot and let me know how many times you have to go back and forth before she understands that .io is, or could be, a “website thingy” (i.e. – domain name extension / TLD)

    Just sayin is all…

In 2007 video.io sold at T.R.A.F.F.I.C. for just the reserve price I had set ($400). Months later the owner even let it expire, I had to warn him… I wish I could have the domain now.

Did you hand reg a couple of .ios? Which ones are they?

What do you think of my LocaleWise.com, about to expire?

    TransferWise.com is in the news.

TransferWise.com is rumored to be in talks with Facebook. But, it doesn’t have anything to do with LocaleWise.com – TransferWise is fintech, meaning, financial tech.

So, what are your dot io domains, or io.com domains?

I’m no expert, although I have been around a while and traded more than my fair share of domains.
Strikes me that the suffix on your TLD doesn’t really matter, as long as your offer is strong enough.

I work on a lot of MVP’s which often arrive with truly alarming domain names, but when they’re successful they all go off the same way – with a large bang.

While on the subject of apps, I’m really not into this notion of every plugin and toll being called an app – a la Windows 10 🙁
