It’s coming like a freight train. 400-600 new gTLDs will become available very soon and with them comes new opportunities for companies to build their brands online like never before. At the same time this change also opens the door for Cybersquatters to squat like never before. Imagine trying to secure your brand when it’s spread across hundreds of TLDs and potentially hundreds of different people.
Previously brands only had to worry about securing their brand name in a handful of TLDs, that job is about to get a lot more complex with the deluge of new gTLDs on the horizon.
Enter Donuts, the largest applicant for new gTLDs. Not only will Donuts most-likely be running close to half of the new gTLDs that hit the market, they’ve also come-up with a pretty slick solution for companies that want to protect their brand online. This solution is called the Domains Protected Marks List (DPML) and it allows companies to block the registration of their brand name at a significant discount.
By acting early companies can lock-in a discount over 90%-95% off registration and renewal costs for either five or ten years. This is the cheapest and most effective way to protect your brand across a large swath of gTLDs and companies like 101 Domain can help.
Here’s how it works:
101domain makes the process simple. On their site, it is just like registering a domain name. Enter your mark in the “DPML” field on this web page. At checkout you’ll be given the option of upgrading to 10 years (There’s a $295 savings with a 10 year subscription). If you don’t have your mark registered through the Trademark Clearinghouse yet, you’ll need to do that first and can and get that process started here. Within 24 business hours, a DPML expert will be in touch with you to help you complete your subscription(s). If you prefer to do it over the phone, just call 101domain toll-free at +1 888 982 7940.
Want to get really geeky? Okay, so if you really want to know the inner-workings of DPML read on, just be prepared, this is all the nitty-gritty details:
1. The program is designed to stop “cyber-squatters” from registering your trademarks and is different than actually registering your domain names. If another company owns the same exact trademark as you do in a different class of business, they will be able to “Over-ride” or unblock the name for a fee. The only way to completely block a name is to register it. As a DPML holder, you have the option of unblocking a domain name yourself for the same fee. It costs more, but this is the only way to completely prevent another entity that holds the same trademark in a different class from registering the domain.
2. Premium domains will not be blocked.
3. Registered domains will not be blocked so it will be important to do your DPML early.
4. The trademark holder must first register a mark with the Trademark Clearinghouse (TMCH). The mark must be registered according to the “use” standard, which is the same standard for registration during the Sunrise period.
5. Each DPML subscription applies across all TLDs operated by Donuts and cannot be applied to a subset of Donuts TLDs.
