With the growth of eSports we’re likely to see some pretty big domain sales

While you might be watching either the NBA Finals or Stanley Cup it might seem like sports where humans face off against humans is where its at. In fact, sports has been this way for a long time really dating back to (and honestly before) the Colosseum in Rome. Yes – essentially forever we have defined sports as a human vs. human sport with the exception of horseback racing which then takes that human and mounts it on an animal. Either way, the concept has stayed roughly the same since the dawn of time.

Now there’s a new form of sports emerging, it’s so new that most people don’t really consider it a sport yet…but since it’s actually being considered for inclusion in the Olympics in 2022 I think it’s only fair to call it a sport. I’m talking about eSports and while you might not watch it now, if you have kids, they probably are watching it, and believe it or not, in 5 – 10 years you might find yourself doing the same.

Some of the world’s best pro gamers will soon be able to win gold medals for playing video games. That’s after the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) announced that e-sports will be officially included as a medal sport at the 2022 Asian Games, to be held in Hangzhou, China. (Source – TheVerge)

Now I’m not at the point yet where I’m watching eSports like I watch the Warriors crush the Cavs (too soon?) but I have started watching it a bit and I do find it surprisingly interesting. The only eSport I’ve watched so far is Clash Royale because I play the game on my iPhone so can actually follow along with the action. Looks like I’m not alone, eSports is expected to become a $1.5 billion dollar industry by 2020 and as we’ve seen time and time again, this means more interest in domain names related to eSports.

So my prediction is that over the next few years we’re going to see some blockbuster sales in the space, and considering that eSports.com is currently under construction I think it’s likely to be one of the big movers. Of course my crystal ball is only as good as, well, it’s not very good. So what do you think? Are eSport domains going to spike over the next few years? Comment and let your voice be heard!
