WordPress Launches v3.8 aka “Parker” + Everything Just Got Darker

Today WordPress pushed its latest update to the incredibly popular blogging platform and along with some shiny new features it also comes with a revamped look and feel. The new design is probably the biggest change I’ve seen in the WordPress since I started using it about five years ago.

They have definitely gone the Apple-route and flattened things out moving away from the more plastically, beveled look that was so popular in the early 2000’s. Here’s a first look at the new interface:

Of course you don’t have to stick with the default color, also a bit like Apple the admin now comes in a variety of different colors going back to the lighter grey we’ve all known for years or going wild with a red or purple.

Along with a snazzy new design they have a nice new magazine theme called Twenty Fourteen which also looks pretty darn slick. I can’t find any more features mentioned in the update outside of the design change but given how large the overhaul it is I can understand why they want to have the focus on the design.

Now my question for you, what do you think? A step forward or a step backwards?

    I just upgraded to the latest version and it looks good. More focused was on design, color schemes and gives a fresh look. Don’t see this upgrade more towards any security patches or fixing any script related issues.

    Overall, it seems nice πŸ™‚

    Get those plugins updated πŸ™‚

    I’ve installed it on all my sites. I quickly checked each of the other colour schemes but for now decided I like the new default black one the best.

    The back end seems to work a lot better on mobile devices it was very choppy before.

    Just updated. Definitely looks better. At first glance it looks like that they’ve just changed some color schemes and such, but after going through the different sections, menus etc. you’ll notice that there’s a lot of small, smart design tweaks everywhere, from animations to fonts. And that blue highlight color looks so fresh!

    @Louise

    Well thank you!

    Can you tell me: why do you not link your name anymore to you websites?

    I love the new 2014 theme but don’t like the admin area so I had to roll back. It’s so hard to read everything in wp-admin with that theme. Even changing the colors don’t help.

    “It’s so hard to read everything in wp-admin with that theme.” That’s why I am leery of upgrading! Google keeps making changes, too – it drives me nuts!

    But I like the responsive direction of the themes: TwentyTwelve, TwentyThirteen, and, now, TwentyFourteen. @ Morgan, how come you got away from your responsive theme? You were one of the first domain bloggers.

    @ Domenclature, sometimes I link in my name, but most often I don’t . . . But I appreciate putting a sample site of your conversion, Soul.fm – how come the other commenters didn’t put their updated sites? I would have appreciated that, to visit them.
