Bob Hawkes just shared some solid insights on how domain length impacts sales

If you don’t know Bob Hawkes, you should, he is without a doubt one of the most analytical, data-driven people I know, and he uses his superpowers πŸ¦Έβ€β™‚οΈ to help us all learn more about domain investing. Bob has been contributing to NamesPros for a long time now as well as writing for NameTalent and participating actively in the Domain Investing Twitterverse.

So I was excited today to see a new post from Bob on NamePros, and the topic is one I’ve always wondered about. How much does the length of a domain impact it’s value, and where’s the sweet spot. I’ve always thought about this and anecdotally I know that super long domains typically aren’t great investments, but I’ve never done a deep dive into the data.

I don’t want to share too much on here because I honestly think everyone should read this article, seriously, go read it now. But I can’t help but share one of the graphics Bob put together that is just awesome:

What I really like about the analysis that Bob did is that he looks across four different TLDs, .COM, .ORG, .CO and .IO. As you can see, the longer a domain gets, the less it sells for and .CO actually has some really solid average sales prices even compared to .COM.
