Domaining SEO Sunday: Increase the Amount of Time Visitors Spend on your Site

SEO can help you get more visitors to your site…however if they only stay for a few seconds was it really worth all the time getting the great rank? The problem here is that most SEO companies stop at SEO and don’t follow-through on the last step which is oftentimes the most crucial. You want to get traffic on your site that converts, this is why topics like Landing Page Optimization have always been some of the hottest in the web development world.

Traffic equals money right? Well…almost. Traffic is the key to making money, but the visitor has to stay on your site long enough to perform an action that makes you money. There have been a million articles over the last few years on all the different subtle changes you can make to increase the amount of time someone spends on a site. However I’ve found that one very simple method actually works the best and takes the least amount of time. Before I tell you let me just share this video with you. In case you didn’t know the Metrodome roof collapsed yesterday and some cameramen captured some pretty amazing footage. I’ve never seen anything else like it and if you haven’t seen the video you have to watch it:

Isn’t that amazing? If you live in a warm part of the country doesn’t this make you want to throw on your bathing suit and hop in the pool? At any rate, I don’t thinks this has happened before and even if it has I don’t think video footage like this has been captured.

Did you watch the video? Not everyone will but answer the question right now…did you watch the video? It was only about 30 seconds long, definitely an interesting video to watch, so did you watch it? If you did then you have spent an additional 30 seconds on the site just because I put the video there. That’s right, video is one of the best ways to increase the amount of time visitors spend on your site. The great thing about video is that it is absolutely free, you can just go to You Tube do a search for the keywords you are targeting and great video content will be available to embed. Couple this with great content and can dramatically increase how long a visitor spends on your site…and the more time they spend on your site, the more likely they are to perform an action that makes you money!

thanks for the article Morgan. I guess if the video is yours, you have some ads popping there, and/or it’s relevant to what your site does then that’s fine. It definitely ads some value.

However, it’s possible that you may have extended the time of the visitor on your site but if the bounce rate is pretty high (which means they leave your site after watching the video) then the increase in visit duration is meaningless.

But yes, in general, video is great to have on websites and I thoroughly enjoyed your video interviews you have posted before.

videos are great, but sometimes it’s harder to convert. I guess when in video ads become more popular, that may be another way to make a buck.

Ya, that can be a major problem. For one of my sites I spend a great deal on SEO, but most people would leave right from the front page. So I had to spice up the design a bit and add more content.

By the way, 3ddi3 nice website! lol I recently launched a .co gaming site too.
